Crystal Palace at Magic Kingdom has reopened, and there are some significant changes. First, due to COVID precautions, the restaurant now serves menu options instead of a buffet meal. Also, at present, characters are not doing meet and greets or even socially distanced greetings.
The meal starts with appetizers of a seasonal salad (tomato and watermelon with blue cheese, candied walnuts, and a hot pepper jelly vinaigrette) and cheddar and bacon biscuits with honey butter, caramelized onion butter, and hot pepper jelly.
The surprise hit was the salad. It sounds like there’s a lot going on in there, but as long as you like the items individually, they go great together. Watermelon and blue cheese are surprisingly good together.
The two adult entrees ordered were the Crispy Fried Chicken (served with Honey pot Drizzle, Macaroni and Cheese and Collard Greens) and the plant-based option, Southern Fried Cauliflower (Hot Maple Drizzle, Roasted Potatoes, and Collard Greens). From the kids’ menu, our junior reviewer got the prime rib with fruit and green beans.
The pictures largely speak for themselves. The fried chicken was bland and greasy, and the mac and cheese had little flavor (which, ironically, made it perfect for our junior reviewer who found the prime rib to be overcooked, dry, and tough). Out of all the dishes, the cauliflower had the best flavor, but the presentation was a bit rough. I sincerely hope that we can chalk up the overcooked prime rib and the sub-par fried chicken to opening-day jitters.
The desserts were certainly eye-catching, but there are two primary problems. First, everything has very distinctive flavors, so if there’s an item there (say, you don’t like banana), then you’ll end up skipping 1/4 or more of the desserts. Second, and my larger problem with it, is that I don’t mind family style desserts when it is a large skillet of something to share — like a skillet of ooey gooey toffee cake from Liberty Tree Tavern where everyone serves themselves onto individual plates. But each of these desserts feels like a “single serving”, so dividing them among everyone at your table feels a bit awkward unless you’re really good friends with your dining companions. Although pretty, the Hummingbird Cake was painfully sweet. The cupcake was a decent enough vanilla cupcake with an odd honey-caramel filling and an over-the-top amount of raspberry mousse on top. The other desserts were good, if you liked the flavors, but nothing exceptional.
The price for the meal is $39 for adults and $23 for kids. Sadly, the experience this weekend made it feel like a poor value, and the food just wasn’t up to Disney standards. However, there is something we do want to mention.
Reopening a restaurant with a new menu is incredibly difficult for the kitchen staff and servers alike, and switching the format of a restaurant can be very challenging. Naturally, opening weekend was expected to have a few bumps. The cast members were wonderful, and you could tell that it was a challenging first day.
At this point, until Crystal Palace finds its new groove in these interesting times, we would suggest skipping this for a meal and going to Liberty Tree Tavern (if your focus is on food) or Cinderella’s Royal Table (if seeing characters is a must). We’ll be back to give this restaurant another review once they’ve worked out some of the hiccups and will let you know how that goes. We have faith that they can work through the challenges and make this once again a wonderful place to eat.
Even on the busiest day, getting to a Disney theme park early can be a magical time. Many times you are able to ride more attractions in the first hour of operations than in several hours after that. Although Disney has posted opening times, the parks generally allow guests in early and some attractions are open and operating before the official opening time. What does it look like? This Saturday, we stopped by Disney’s Hollywood Studios and entered the park at 8:20 a.m. (on a posted 9:00 a.m. opening day). Here’s what it looked like to walk around.
Do you love early days in the parks? Do you prefer getting in as many rides as you can or just soaking in the joy of being in Disney?

Although EPCOT currently remains without a nighttime spectacular due to COVID, work continues to plan for the debut of the new nighttime show Harmonious. Recently, it was announced that this show will be unique in that the massive barges for the show will also be stationed out in World Showcase lagoon during the day for fountain effects. This week, those barges started to move to their locations in World Showcase lagoon, and signage was added to start the massive hype for this show.
Will we see daytime testing of the fountains during the time when we are still on a nighttime show hiatus? Here’s hoping! With the removal of Fountain of Nations in Future World, there’s a lot of desire to bring fountains back to EPCOT.
Are you excited about this upcoming show? What are your thoughts about having these large barges there during the day? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
The year is winding down and California has been hit with a new set of restrictions for businesses. The two restrictions that have affected Downtown Disney at Disneyland Resort are retail locations being limited to 20% capacity, and no indoor or outdoor dining. This has changed a few things in Downtown Disney and the recently reopened Buena Vista Street, but we’ll get in to that later.
In Disney California Adventure, more of the Hollywood Land portion of the park has been made available for guest traffic. This means everyone can grab pictures right in front of the Red Car Trolley parked outside of the Disney Animation building.
Off the Page in DCA has also reopened. The shop’s usual assortment of art, collectable figures, and books is available, as well as Christmas ornaments and merchandise found in other stores around Downtown Disney.
Lithographs and other pieces of art on sale.
A large selection of pins and phone cases in Off the Page.
The Disney Art On Demand kiosks are available if you want something custom printed.
A small section of figures.
The higher-end framed pieces are also for sale.
A selection of books can be found in Off the Page
Over on Buena Vista Street, some merchandise carts have been set up in front of the park’s wait time board and guest information kiosk.
Plenty of Christmas merch at this location.
In many of the Disney stores in DCA or Downtown Disney you’ll see a rare sight, a substantial discount on select Christmas merchandise. It’s worth mentioning this will stack with your annual pass discount as well.
Certain items have also been discounted.
The dining restriction has brought the biggest change Downtown Disney and Buena Vista Street. While third-party eateries in the resort remain open only for to-go orders, Disney has opted to not even bother with food sales. All of their dining locations that opened only weeks ago have again been shuttered.
Sorry, no more Disney corn dogs for you.
Grizzly Peak reopened last month along with Buena Vista Street, but with Smokejumpers being closing down the land is again closed off and not accessible to guests.
Heading over to World of Disney I noticed Disney is advertising a mobile checkout option for visitors.
Spotted in Julius Katz & Sons on Buena Vista Street is this Walt Disney and Mickey vinyl figure for $29.99.
Back at World of Disney, a variety of fuzzy sweatshirts are now available for $69.99 each.
There’s also these cute kids versions.
Pretty nice Disneyland knitted sweater for $59.99.
These two shirts have some serious 90s vibes. $24.99 each.
It seems like the Spider-Bot is this is the latest thing that Disney wishes was A Thing. It’s definitely cute and looks like it would be fun to play with, but at $79.99, and the ride it’s based on being in limbo, there doesn’t seem to be much interest in these things.
I have no doubt demand for the Spider-Bots will pick up once Avengers Campus opens at DCA.
A decent amount of Soul merchandise is starting to appear at World of Disney. I’m excited for this movie.
That’s it for this Downtown Disney update. See anything you want? Have you visited Downtown Disney recently and want to share your experience? Let me know in the comments below.
