5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good

Can you believe Disney World is reopening next month?

5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good

Welcome Home!!

Disney has been preparing throughout the closures for its re-opening. Even though Disney World has already seen changes like face mask requirements and distancing measures, a few of the updates might actually become a part of everyday park life.

Despite the fact that many guests miss the way Disney was before the closures, these modifications to Disney World’s guidelines could be helpful alternatives going forward in the parks!

QR Menus

As Disney World has started to re-open, the parks have introduced multiple contactless measures. One of these is the QR code menus throughout Disney World that help reduce contact points for guests and Cast Members. While health and safety standards may change slightly in restaurants after things start to return to “normal,” the QR menus could stick around so there are fewer high-touch points at locations across the parks.

5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good

Wine Bar George QR Code for Digital Menus

Although we’ve also seen paper menus, restaurants might lean towards the QR option more often for reasons BEYOND health and safety.

Disney has also been increasing its conservation efforts across the board for a while in the parks already, by moving toward eliminating plastic straws and mini toiletry bottles. So if guests get used to the digital menus, Disney could reduce the amount of paper menus in the restaurants long-term in an effort to go greener!

5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good

Raglan Road Paper Menu

However, since some guests don’t have smartphones, Disney would also have to make a few handheld menus available as needed.

Additionally, moving toward digital menus could also allow restaurants to update menus quickly and easily online without having to print excessive amounts of paper when a menu item changes. Think more market-inspired seasonal or even daily specialties, farm to table fare, faster updates when items sell out, and more customization altogether for Disney World menus! That would be pretty cool.

Click here to see these QR Codes in Action in Disney Springs!

Hand-Sanitizer and Hand-Washing Stations

Since Disney World is upholding strict health and safety regulations when the parks re-open, hand-sanitizing and hand-washing stations have started to be placed around the parks. While they were available right before Disney World closed, Disney Springs has also placed them throughout the shopping and dining district.

5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good

Hand Sanitizer Station

The readily available stations are actually a great way to encourage guests as well as Cast Members to keep up with sanitary efforts. If they are placed around the parks, people wouldn’t have to go find a restroom just to wash their hands (Liberty Square is already grateful since it has no restrooms anyways!). We’ve been to Disney World with kids MANY times and can tell you there’s practically always a reason to wash their hands! 5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good ?

5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good

Hand-washing Station

We’ve also seen Universal Orlando’s inclusion of hand-sanitizing stations before boarding attractions, which would be beneficial in eliminating some of the germs passed through contact on rides.

5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good

Sanitizer

Disney Springs has also provided hand-sanitizer and access to restrooms in restaurants so guests can wash their hands before and after they eat, in an effort to promote cleanliness. All of these efforts to reduce the spread of germs could be beneficial beyond the current crisis.

How many people have visited Disney World only to get sick as soon as you get home (we’re raising all our hands)? This could help reduce that overall.

We really hope that Disney World does this in their restrooms when the parks re-open!

Increased Sanitation Efforts

As the parks re-open, Disney will most likely be following similar procedures in restaurants, using distancing stickers and signs, and implementing more protocol we’ve already seen in Disney Springs. While Disney has already increased its cleaning efforts, the parks are going to be a completely different ball game.

Protect the Magic Signs

However, Universal Orlando has already shown a few measures that Disney should probably take notes on. While there is already frequent cleaning of high-touch spaces, Universal has also created sanitation measures specific to attractions.

On top of guests using hand-sanitizer before many attractions, Team Members also wipe down the seats, and even hand out 3D goggles themselves so multiple guests aren’t handling them.

No-Touch Goggles

Universal has also implemented the use of a barcode or scannable park ticket instead of its regular finger scanner. Since Disney World also uses finger scanners along with MagicBands, it would make sense for the parks to switch things up when they re-open to reduce high-contact touchpoints. (Note that Disney World has announced that it will be discontinuing complimentary MagicBands in 2021, so perhaps that is a step toward using contactless ticket media.)

Islands of Adventure Main Entrance

Although we don’t have much information (yet), the new Park Pass reservation system may incorporate new virtual ticketing elements to use in order to cut down on high-touch areas as well.

These BIG changes in the parks aren’t nearly as bad as we thought they would be!

Temperature Checks

Although many guests wondered what the temperature checks would be like when they entered theme parks again, we have to say that our experience so far has been pretty good! While Disney Springs already uses contactless thermometers to make sure guests and employees entering the shopping and dining district are below the 100.4 temperature limit, mandatory temperature checks will be instated in Disney World parks as well.

5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good

Temperature Screening

Though we already have an idea of how temperature checks may work in the Disney Parks, Universal has also made it even simpler to get a temperature check when staying on-site.

5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good

Temp Checks at Universal

After a guest receives a temperature check at one of the resorts, they receive a wristband to show that they have already been screened for the day. Instead of re-checking guests over and over again, Team Members will let these guests skip another round of screenings.

5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good

Temp Check Wristband

While it hasn’t been stated if Disney World will be doing the same thing, the wristbands after temperature checks would reduce the time spent by hotel guests going through park temperature checks, and may reduce overall wait times to enter the parks.

This is what we’ve learned from experiencing a VERY different Disney World!

Changes in the Mobile Order System

Mobile Order has been a game-changer for us when it comes to planning our days in the parks. Instead of waiting in long lines for your food, you can schedule a time to pick it up so you aren’t wasting that precious time that could be spent riding Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good

Mobile Order Sign

While the parks have been closed, though, there has been an increase in Mobile Order locations in Disney Springs that we expect to see mirrored in the parks. My Disney Experience has also updated payment information with more accepted contactless methods of payment, as well as implemented windows of time for Mobile Order pick-ups. Previously, these time windows were only seen in Disneyland.

5 New Disney World Changes That Could Stick Around For Good

Mobile Order Payment Options

If Disney restricts the window of time to pick up your orders, it potentially spaces out crowds so you’d be able to create more distance between guests.

Select a Participating Restaurant

Also, if more locations accept Mobile Order, it would be easier than ever to grab and go so you can get on with your day.

Here are the ways buffets may be changing in Disney World when the parks re-open!

Although these big changes might seem different and possibly scary in such a well-known environment, the new updates are necessary to keep guests and Cast Members safe. Some of these changes could possibly be for the better in the long run. If we approach them with an open mind, we might all be surprised how quickly we adapt to the changes in Disney World and beyond.

Here’s why you need to skip sleeping in and go to Disney World in the morning!

What changes are you looking forward to seeing in the parks? Let us know in the comments below!

FIRST LOOK! Here’s What’s Different About Kona Cafe in Disney World

Select Disney World restaurants have now reopened, and we’re checking them out! So far, we’ve swung by Captain Cook’s to try the gorgeous Welcome Back Cupcake and gotten a quick Dole Whip fix at Pineapple Lanai!

FIRST LOOK! Here’s What’s Different About Kona Cafe in Disney World

Kona Cafe

Now, we’re headed to Kona Cafe at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort to scope it out — let’s take a look!

Check-In

Kona Cafe is utilizing the new Mobile Dine Check-In feature that’s just been added to the My Disney Experience app! Instead of going up to the host stand, you can virtually let the restaurant know you’ve arrived for your reservation!

FIRST LOOK! Here’s What’s Different About Kona Cafe in Disney World

Host Stand

Once you’ve completed the contactless check-in, you’ll receive a separate notification when your table is ready — it’s that easy!

See how Disney’s Mobile Dine Check-In works step-by-step here!

Seating

Kona Cafe tables and chairs have been spread apart.

Some of the booths have been closed off to allow for optimal social distancing. Signs on the tables designated which tables were closed.

We also noticed the barstools around the sushi bar were present, but no longer a seating option for guests.

Sushi Bar

That covers the turf, so let’s check out the FOOD!

Menu

While some Disney World restaurants have a disposable paper menu available upon request, Kona Cafe only has a digital QR menu at this time.

Kona Cafe

Along with many other restaurants that have recently reopened, Kona Cafe’s menu has been reduced a great deal, but there are still plenty of offerings including sushi, sandwiches, salads, desserts, and most importantly for some, DRINKS!

See what didn’t make the cut on Kona Cafe’s new limited menu here!

Food and Beverages

It wouldn’t be a trip to Disney’s Polynesian Resort without something tropical to sip on! Kona Cafe doesn’t staff a bartender during lunch hours, but they DO have one ready to go for dinner service. Luckily, a manager was able to sub in and mix up a delicious Lapu Lapu for $18!

FIRST LOOK! Here’s What’s Different About Kona Cafe in Disney World

Lapu Lapu

Now that we’ve been instantly transported to paradise (with a little help from the rum and fruit juices served in a blessed PINEAPPLE!) it’s time to order some FOOD! We’re going with the Crispy Pork and Vegetable Potstickers, Pork Belly Noodle Bowl, and Steak Salad!

FIRST LOOK! Here’s What’s Different About Kona Cafe in Disney World

Kona Cafe Meal

We should mention our meal came with complimentary bread, too! Kona Cafe used to serve an amazing macadamia nut butter with their rolls that we still miss. Nowadays, it’s a standard slice of butter. Nothing fancy, but still delicious!

Bread Service

The Crispy Pork and Vegetable Potstickers were served with a soy vinaigrette dressing and cost $10. The had a really nice sear to them while the filling was nice and tender.

Crispy Pork and Vegetable Potstickers

The Pork Belly Noodle Bowl for $24 was GREAT! The bowl includes rice noodles mixed with egg, mushrooms, bok choy, and other vegetables served in delicious broth! The star of the show is the pork belly though, and the hot sesame oil really adds a nice extra layer of depth to the dish.

FIRST LOOK! Here’s What’s Different About Kona Cafe in Disney World

Pork Belly Bowl

The last entrée we enjoyed was the Steak Salad for $23. It was served with an incredible sunny-side-up egg for those of you who enjoy a little runny yolk in yo’ life (which we happen to be big fans of!). When the yolk mixed with the Kona house vinaigrette dressing, it really made the flavors POP!

FIRST LOOK! Here’s What’s Different About Kona Cafe in Disney World

Steak Salad

We would have liked to end our meal with a Hawaiian Pressed Coffee or  Banana Trifle, but they were out of a few menu items when we stopped by today. We’re guessing once things get up and runnin’ again, they’ll know how much product to stock and might make a few more menu adjustments when they do!

Overall, they have spaced out the restaurant and limited the menu like the rest of the restaurants we’ve eaten at lately, but of course, Kona Cafe has that signature Polynesian flair! We’ll be back soon with more Disney World eats (that’s right — we’ve miraculously saved some room) so stay tuned!

Here are the Disney World dining changes guests will experience this summer!

Are you surprised by any of the changes at Kona Cafe? Let us know in the comments!

These Are the GLITCHES with the New Disney Park Pass Reservation System — And How to Deal With Them

Well, the much-awaited Disney Park Pass theme park reservation system went live yesterdayand it had some issues.

These Are the GLITCHES with the New Disney Park Pass Reservation System — And How to Deal With Them

We’re Working On It

As Disney World resort guests with existing reservations became the first to access the Disney Park Pass system, there were apparently some serious glitches to deal with. Reports flooded in of lengthy wait times, inaccurate reservation limits, and falsely unavailable park days.

Let’s take a look at some of the glitches that guests encountered — and how to handle them for the next big Disney Park Pass day on June 26th (for Passholders without Resort reservations) or June 28th (for guests with just tickets).

Wait Times

First off, let’s talk about wait times to get into the site. According to the Tampa Bay Times, many people reported super lengthy wait times. We here at DFB were even stuck with some long waits! Our readers experienced this as well.  We had commenters explain that they had spent HOURS waiting to get to the Disney Park Pass page by midday yesterday.

Most folks were stuck looking at one of Disney’s many virtual waiting room screens or error messages. Perhaps the most notorious of which is the new pink Cinderella Castle screen. While “Just a Moment…” rang true for some, it was certainly more than a moment for others.

Such an overload was likely due to high demand. In fact, we had issues accessing all sorts of pages on the Disney World site, even those completely unrelated to the Disney Park Pass. Since yesterday, wait times have apparently settled down. We haven’t heard nearly as many complaints about being unable to access the system.

These Are the GLITCHES with the New Disney Park Pass Reservation System — And How to Deal With Them

Disney Park Pass Error Message

But, that doesn’t mean that these wait times won’t crop up again. Yesterday was just the first round of the Disney Park Pass opening. Those with existing resort reservations have access to the system now, but June 26th will allow Annual Passholders (without hotel reservations) to reserve and June 28th will bring existing ticket holders into the mix.

It’s definitely possible that these big release days will see extended waits and glitchy virtual queues once more. But fear not, dear reader! We have a few tips and tricks to improving your chances of making it to the Disney Park Pass screen.

These Are the GLITCHES with the New Disney Park Pass Reservation System — And How to Deal With Them

Stitch, you dastardly little guy.

For one, folks reported that using Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Firefox worked much better than Safari or Internet Explorer. Theme park journalist Carlye Wisel reported that, while using Safari, she got stuck on a blank white screen when she loaded in.

If you end up stuck in a waiting room for some time, try using an incognito browser and/or clearing cookies. This might give the site the clean slate it needs to load you in. Just keep in mind, your wait may be long just because there are a lot of people ahead of you. If these tips don’t work, remember to be patient and keep trying. Wait times and demand on the site WILL lighten up the longer the system is up.

Annual Passholder Limit Glitch

Still, the issues don’t end once you make it to the Disney Park Pass page. Though Annual Passholders without hotel reservations cannot access the Disney Park Pass system until Friday, Annual Passholders WITH hotel reservations got to make their theme park reservations yesterday. Unfortunately, a few of them ran into some glitches.

The official policy for Disney Park Pass for Annual Passholders limits them to three Park Passes at a time, UNLESS they have a Disney World resort reservation. The resort stay trumps the Annual Pass limit and allows Passholders to book for the length of stay — or at least it’s supposed to.

These Are the GLITCHES with the New Disney Park Pass Reservation System — And How to Deal With Them

Screenshot From Disney World’s Website

Lots of Passholders reported yesterday via comments and social media that they were being limited to just three days, despite having an active resort reservation for longer. For some, the limit was longer than three, but the system was still cutting them off when they had more days left on their resort reservations.

Shannon at @brbgoingtodisney explained on Instagram that her reservations were inexplicably capped at eight days and another Annual Passholder in her party was limited to two days. That certainly sounds like another glitch! Lots of folks ran into this issue, but it wasn’t the case for every Annual Passholder. We had no trouble booking through our resort reservations and didn’t run into any wonky limits.

Some Annual Passholders, including @brbgoingtodisney’s Shannon, WERE able to get past the inaccurate caps and limits when they tried later in the day. So, if you had this issue and it hasn’t resolved, try again today. You may be surprised to see the cap lifted.

If you’re STILL having trouble, you should contact Disney. Some of our readers and other guests are reporting that they are getting an IT ticket through contacting Disney’s Website Support at (407) 939-4357. Disney may be able to personally fix your account. Just keep in mind, the phone lines are EXTREMELY busy right now so be patient and keep trying if this is what you need to do.

Did you have issues with the system yesterday? Click here!

No Availability Glitch

The final glitch is a super strange one that seemed to affect a lot of Disney guests. Lots of folks were reporting that the Disney Park Pass looked completely booked up — all the way through the end of the year. This is definitely NOT the case. As of now, only a few days are booked up for only a few parks, so this is most definitely a glitch.

For some, the system is showing that parks are unavailable because they are outside of a guest’s specific booking window. For others, there’s a glitch that shows no availability for days they SHOULD be able to book. If you see this, make sure you check that you should be able to book a park reservation that day and take a look at the Disney Park Pass Availability Calendar to see what should be available to you.

According to theme parks reporter Scott Gustin, Disney is aware of this issue and is working on a fix. You may also be able to repeatedly select the desired date until the available parks show up as they should. If they STILL won’t show, clear cookies or use an incognito browser and try again.

Click here to see what parks and days ARE booked up!

Disney has reportedly received contact about these glitches and is currently working through them. Some folks have seen success later in the day after running into glitches so don’t be afraid to give your theme park reservations another go. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments and we’ll do our best to help out with your situation!

Hopefully, the Disney Park Pass system will be running smoothly soon. We guess we’ll get an idea of how stable the system is with Friday’s Annual Passholder opening!
