This Week’s Weather at Walt Disney World – August 16, 2020

How long will this stormy and sweaty pattern stick around in Central Florida? If you answered: “Through October!” haha, you’re very funny, and partially right. But if you’ve been around Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, or anywhere else here in the center of the state, you’ve probably gotten slammed with some big storms in the late evening. Rain has been higher than average for the past week. What’s going on? It’s all to do with sea breezes.

We know that sea breezes meet in the middle of the state and the collision causes storms. Well, some complicated acrobatics take place with the sea breezes every afternoon. A prevailing flow usually dictates if the east coast or west sea breeze is strongest. On those stormy evenings when the rain seems to blossom over Orlando and refuse to move away, that’s because there’s no real guidance from the atmosphere: the east and west sea breeze simply meet in the middle and blow up there.

We started there last week, but then we picked up a southwest flow. Since the second half of last week, a high pressure ridge has been sitting south of Central Florida. The resulting southwest flow ramps up the moisture as well as pushing the storms from west to east. So we’ve had some big afternoon storms, with boundary collisions lingering late into the night. They’ve been making big lightning shows, roughly from the Walt Disney World area to points east. Hail and gusty winds have produced damage in the area, as well.

The storms have eventually crowded over to the east coast, and that trend will continue this week. The southwest flow can be strong enough some days to pin the sea breeze to the Atlantic beaches. When that happens, the storms congregate along the collisions which occur along the east coast, leaving the interior of Florida sweltering with just some brief storms to break up the day.

Midday cumulus lead to afternoon storms!

Whether you prefer a day with quick rain and a return to sunshine and broken clouds, or a wild and wet evening, you’ll usually get both in a single week in Central Florida. One weather pattern rarely sticks around longer than three or four days. The southwest flow is going to be with us through Thursday, but each day will have its own twists on the theme.

Troughing in the Gulf of Mexico, that steadfast Atlantic ridge to our south, and a stormy feature over the southeast will all keep the moisture high in the atmosphere through the coming week. The strength of the daily southwest flow is the only question in each day’s forecast. It’s not whether it will rain in Central Florida, it’s who will get rained on, and who will stay hot?

This week’s weather at Walt Disney World

For the rest of Sunday, the general idea of hot with a chance of storms is good. The southwest flow throws a little wrench into the storm forecast itself, though. Starting early this morning, some showers were already making their way onshore from the Gulf of Mexico. At the same time, there seems little chance of an east coast sea breeze today.

So while storms are probably going to favor the Atlantic coast this afternoon and evening, some scattered storms could flow into the Orlando from the west. Either way, it should dry out in the evening.

Monday through Thursday, the rain chances stay above average with about a 70-80% chance each day. Look for sunny, humid mornings that quickly climb to about 93 degrees before afternoon storms begin to develop in the early afternoon. Nights will be quite warm: around 76 for a low, with a calm wind.

Storms could become numerous in late afternoon, and will likely travel from west to east. As boundary collisions produce more storms, however, their movement can become erratic and surprising, so always be on guard when you notice lightning in the distance. We saw this one night last week when storms hung out nearly stationary near the parks for a few hours, then suddenly billowed onto property just after sunset, bringing heavy rain and very severe lightning.

By Friday, the pattern begins to shift. The Atlantic ridge should finally shift from its position to the south and move into Florida. Friday’s rain chance is still 70%, high for the time of year, but moving into the weekend things should become more seasonal. The southwest flow will subside and the weekend will have a 40-50% chance of an afternoon storm.

Tropical Weather Outlook

There’s suddenly a lot going on in the tropics, although the two named storms currently out there are mostly raining on the fish. Post-Tropical Cyclone Kyle is heading across the Atlantic, and Tropical Storm Josephine is near Puerto Rico but is expected to run into high pressure and get shunted out to sea.

There are two tropical waves well to the south which are being watched for development this week. Both have a formation chance of about 30% in the next five days. Neither is really expected to achieve any development before mid to late week. One or both of these could be topics of conversation next Sunday, but even then they’ll still be very far away from Florida.

Whisk Up Some Magic in Your Kitchen with These New Disney Utensils

Many of us are spending a lot more time making meals in the kitchen nowadays. Sometimes we could use a little magic to make mealtime more fun. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios our team spotted a Mickey Mouse whisk and some Princess-themed spatulas that make cooking extra magical.

The whisk features a whimsical looking Mickey Mouse, with a full body figure as the handle. Priced at $16.99 it certainly costs more than your average whisk, though it’s easy to argue this is more than your standard kitchen whisk. Behind the whisk in the pictures below you can spot the Mad Tea Party Mixing Bowl Set for $34.99.

The silicone spatulas are available as the enchanted rose from “Beauty and the Beast”, or Cinderella’s coach. The colors are bright and Cinderella’s coach has a sparkly sheen. They are priced at $14.99.

Disney has been producing some great kitchen ware lately. While it does not appear these items are available at shopDisney online there are some other cute items available. My favorite are the Mickey Mouse Glove Corn Holders for $6.99.  I also came across these Mickey Mouse Collapsible Measuring Cups for $19.99 which are perfect for anyone like me who is sick of rummaging through their unorganized kitchen drawer.

Lots of people are turning to the comfort of tea during these rough times. Add some cuteness to your cuppa with this Minnie Bow Tea Infuser for $14.99. Or, if you just gotta have your morning coffee (or midday coffee – no judgement) there is a Mickey Mouse Coffee Scoop for $9.99, with Mickey in the same whimsical pose and look as the whisk.

Upon looking further on shopDisney online, I learned this new look for Mickey Mouse is part of the Disney Parks Mousewares Collection, which is full of colorful items.  There’s lots of cute items, including this adorable Mickey Balloon Spoon Rest for $9.99.

There’s always something new and exciting coming out at Disney Parks, and it is great that you can find plenty of new Disney Parks items on shopDisney online.

Universal Crowd Calendar Update – August 2020

Universally Crowded

Crowds are picking up at Universal Orlando Resort. Last weekend we saw Universal Studios hit a crowd level ‘9’ on both days while Islands of Adventure went ‘7’, ‘8’. These are, by far, the highest crowd levels we have seen at any park since the reopening. So, it is time another Crowd Calendar update.

These recent crowd levels are in line with historical averages for August at Universal theme parks. It may be that the recent Florida Resident Discount is appealing enough to draw local guests. The discount is significant giving Florida residents unlimited admission to both parks between now and December 24 for the price of a single day.

Park Operations and Social Distancing

Our previous update for Universal crowd levels included adjustments for reduced capacity. Since crowd levels are up we are reducing those adjustments. Crowd predictions on this update will look a lot like normal predictions for Universal. Social distancing is still in effect at the parks and attendance may not be as high as normal but wait times are high. The Universal Crowd Calendar is based on posted wait times at the attractions.

Posted Times May Be Inflated

Our staff in the parks today noticed that actual wait times are significantly lower than the posted times, much lower than the 65-80% range we normally see. We recorded actual wait times of 15 minutes for attractions that had a posted time of 65 minutes or more. This is odd. It is difficult to know why posted wait times would be so inflated but it’s good news for anyone planning on heading to the parks. The wait time estimates used for a touring plan take into account this gap between posted time and actual time.

As always, we will continue to monitor the wait times at Universal Orlando Resort and make adjustments to the calendar as needed.

Have any questions about the Universal Crowd Calendar update? Let us know in the comments.

Multiple EPCOT World Showcase Shops Reopen – Let’s Take a Look Inside

Now that EPCOT has reopened, a lot of the park is covered in construction walls, with a mish-mash of Flower and Garden Festival displays still up, Flower and Garden Festival merchandise still available for sale, and the Taste of Epcot International Food and Wine Festival taking place – a sort of miniature version of the festival that we are used to.

Adding to the strangeness is that a variety of World Showcase restaurants and merchandise shops have remained shuttered even though the park has reopened. On a recent visit to EPCOT, our team noticed some of the shops now open, and some fun new merchandise too.

We weren’t able to get pricing on all the items pictured below. Where possible I have provided pricing of similar items. It is often fun to purchase items at the theme parks you can’t find anywhere else, and this can be especially true with the mashup of international culture and Disney fun at EPCOT’s World Showcase.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Donald Espresso Apron – Estimated $24.99
  • I Love Gelato Mini Purse –  $44.99
  • I Love Gelato Tumbler with Straw –  $19.99
  • Stitch Eiffel Tower Figure – $16.99
  • Shanghai Disneyland Train Set –  $128 (originally $198)
  • Viking Mickey Mouse Ear Headband – $29.99

Tips for Traveling to Walt Disney World with a Toddler in 2020

Everyone is facing their own unique challenges this year. For those with toddlers, like me, 2020 presents challenges that at times are exhausting. But last month we stole ourselves away for a quick overnight weekend for our return to Walt Disney World. There were some high points and low points, and unique moments that come from traveling with a toddler. Here are some of my tips for traveling to Walt Disney World with a toddler in 2020.

Tips for Traveling to Walt Disney World with a Toddler in 2020
Disney with a Toddler – Animal Kingdom July 2020

Tips for Getting a Toddler to Wear a Face Mask

When I posted a few photos of our trip that included our toddler wearing his face mask, I received quite a few inquiries as to how we “got our son to wear a face mask”. So here are a couple of pointers. First, I talked with my son ahead of time. About a week or so before we headed to Walt Disney World I spoke with him a few times, setting the expectation. “When we are at Animal Kingdom and at EPCOT we will need to wear our masks,” I would say to him multiple times at various moments leading up to our trip. Like with many things, if you set the expectation and explain things ahead of time you generally make things easier on yourself.

Second, we’ve talked about the virus and health and wellness. Our toddler does not like washing his hands at all. We’ve listened to songs about washing hands. We’ve read books with characters who wash their hands. We make a game of it. We sing songs about it. It’s still not his favorite. But when I explain how germs and viruses work he tends to get it. And that helped with the mask.

Disney with a Toddler – Socially Distant Alice in Wonderland

I also looked for fun designs with familiar characters for children’s face masks. We practiced wearing them and he would even ask to wear them while at home. I will say, during our weekend at Disney, his patience and willingness to wear his mask waned towards the end. We only did 2-3 hours in the parks at a time. We committed to staying outside the entire time, as an extra precaution. And in the summer heat our energy was zapped pretty quickly. He fought wearing the mask at the end of our first evening at EPCOT, so we wrapped up our evening and headed back to our cabin at Fort Wilderness. The next day, after close to 3 hours at Animal Kingdom, he did not want to wear it any longer. We were all pretty hot and tired so we packed up the car and headed for home.

Tips for Physical Distancing with a Toddler

Similar to preparing my toddler to wear a face mask, I talk with him every so often about keeping his distance. This is not an easy concept for either of us. It’s difficult, internally, to think about having to teach your little human to keep his distance from other humans. But I go back to explaining how germs and viruses work. I also frame it up as a courtesy to other people. The same way we teach him to ask for things politely, and to say thank you, we teach him the courtesy and safety of giving other people space. It also really helps when there are markings on the ground. And if all else fails we kept him in his stroller so we could control the distance.

Disney with a Toddler – Wilderness Explorers Physically Distant

I highly recommend the Wilderness Explorers activities at Animal Kingdom if you are struggling for things to do at Disney that are outside and feel safe. We did a few of the stations and the Cast Members did an excellent job of physical distancing and being contactless. When our little Wilderness Explorer earned his badge for the activity the Cast Member would place the sticker on the table, asking him to wait, and then stepped back and invited him to step forward and take his sticker. We also stuck to pathways that had space and made it easier to distance.

Tips for Staying Overnight at Disney with a Toddler

It can be tough for kids to sleep in an unfamiliar place. This can be even more true for toddler who has just made the transition from crib to toddler bed. We stayed the night in a Fort Wilderness Cabin – we don’t quite feel comfortable staying in a traditional hotel right now, and the home away from home amenities had strong appeal. At the cabins at Fort Wilderness, there is one bedroom and it has a queen size bed as well as a set of bunk beds. Our toddler slept in the bottom bunk – because he certainly is too small for the top bunk, and the safety sign on the bunk bed explained only children over age six should be allowed on the top bunk.

Fort Wilderness Cabin Kitchen and Living Area

Prior to arrival I called the Disney Reservation Center and requested bedrails. The bedrails were not in our cabin when we arrived, which was no big deal and we were just thankful to have a cabin ready for us at 1:30 p.m. so we could take a break from the summer heat we experienced at EPCOT earlier in the day. Once inside the cabin I called the front desk and requested the bedrails. About 20 minutes later a Cast Member arrived, wearing gloves and a mask, with the bedrail in a plastic bag. He kindly offered to set it up for us, but I declined. We’d rather not take any chances. My husband was able to figure out how to set it up and voila – our toddler had a safe bed in which to sleep.

Fort Wilderness Cabin Bedroom – with bedrail on bunk bed

Our little toddler has multiple comfort items that help us at bedtime. Thankfully these items are portable and we brought them with us–we always do when we travel anywhere. We also bring along some favorite bedtime books. Anything that models the bedtime routine at home is a big help.

If you book somewhere that does not have a small bed, like bunk beds, be sure to check that they offer bedrails and check to see if they fit on whatever bed sizes are in your room. Another option is to see if they offer a rollaway bed and bedrails. Usually rollaway beds are smaller and lower to the ground than regular beds.

Other Tips and Information

  • Stroller rental is available at Disney theme parks, and extra cleaning precautions are being taken.
  • We made use of the Baby Care Center in the parks for restroom breaks with less people and a toddler-friendly environment.
  • Although there is hand sanitizer and hand washing stations readily available, we brought our own wipes and spray, which came in handy multiple times during our trip.
