Walt Disney World to End Complimentary MagicBands

I’ve said that in a weird way, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it’s kind of a nice reset for the Walt Disney World Resort. It allows them to take a look at the things that are and aren’t working and tweak them so that they could work better. Today Disney announced that another one of those aspects of a Disney vacation that is now being tweaked.

When MagicBands were introduced, it was really right on the cusp of smart phones becoming not only prevalent, but also incredibly advanced in the ways we do things. Due to smart phone technology, it really made MagicBands kind of a unnecessary thing right out of the gate. Now, while MagicBands aren’t going away, Disney is going to be making some tweaks with this system.

In 2021, Disney will unveil an innovative new offering as part of the My Disney Experience app that will bring features of a MagicBand to your smart devices. With this new offering it will mean that complimentary MagicBands will no longer be offered to Disney Resort hotel guests for new reservations with arrivals beginning January 1, 2021.

Now, don’t worry. If you still would like to use a MagicBand on your vacation and you are a Disney Resort hotel guests you will continue to have the option to be able to purchase them at a discount. Those Guests who prefer not to purchase a discounted MagicBand will be able to use the My Disney Experience app or a Key to the World card during their visit.

MagicBands will still be offered for sale in retail locations and on shopDisney.com, and guests will be able to continue using them throughout Walt Disney World Resort. All that’s changing is that technology is making it so you don’t really have to, if you don’t want to.

One of the great things about Sprinkles Cupcakes is the seasonal cupcakes they offer. Summertime brings bright, sunny flavors like Pineapple Upside Down Cake. June, being Pride Month, also brings a special Pride cupcake.

The Pineapple Upside Down Cake cupcake is bursting with pineapple flavor. Pineapple fans will swoon over the pineapple cake filled with caramelized pineapple, and topped off with pineapple frosting.

Disney Introduces Disney Park Pass System To Reserve Theme Park Admittance

The parks are reopening soon (July 11 for the Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Animal Kingdom and July 15 for Disney’s Hollywood Studios and EPCOT) and as part of the reopening, Disney has clearly stated that there would be some sort of reservation system that would allow Guests to access the parks. Enter the Disney Park Pass System!

With the Disney Park Pass System, it will allow the Walt Disney World Resort to limit attendance and control guest density to align with guidance from health and government authorities on physical distancing. Moving forward for the time being, all guests with a ticket or Annual Pass will be required to make a reservation in advance for each park entry, using the new online tool.

In order to use Disney Park Pass System, Guests will need:

  • A My Disney Experience account
  • Valid theme park ticket or Annual Pass that’s linked to their My Disney Experience account
  • For those with a Disney Resort hotel reservation, you will also need to be sure to link it to this My Disney Experience account beforehand

Once Guests have logged into their My Disney Experience account and linked their ticket, they’ll have access to a calendar of available reservation dates for each theme park. If Guests have a multi-day ticket, they will be required to make a park reservation for each date of their visit. Families and friends can link their tickets together and look to arrange theme park entries at the same time.

One thing to keep in mind is that park reservations are limited in number and subject to availability. This availability can change until your reservation is finalized.

Unfortunately, at this time, guests will only be able to select one park per day; visiting more than one park per day will be temporarily unavailable due to the strict attendance limitations. Those Guests who have tickets that include the Park Hopper Option or Park Hopper Plus Option have options available to them for ticket modifications and cancellations. The hope is that Disney will be able to bring back the ability to visit more than one park per day soon and they will continue to offer these add-ons for 2021 ticket purchases.

Beginning this week, Disney will be reaching out to Guests who have already purchased tickets, as well as Annual Passholders with more information on when they will be able to check availability to make their park reservations. The Disney Park Pass system will be opened to these guests in phases, beginning with those with future Disney Resort and other select hotel stays.

For those who are still looking to purchase tickets and make resort hotel bookings, sales of these items will resume later this summer and will be based on availability of park reservations.

Here are the important dates to keep track of:

  • June 22: Guests with Disney Resort Hotel reservations and valid theme park admission that is linked in My Disney Experience can start to make theme park reservations
  • June 26: Disney Park Pass System will open for Annual Passholders
  • June 28: Disney Park Pass System will open to existing ticket holders. In addition, by June 28, new Disney Resort hotel packages and theme park tickets will be on sale for arrivals in 2021.
  • Later this summer: Based on availability, sales of 2020 tickets and Disney Resort hotel arrivals will resume.

Here is what you need to know via handy dandy video:

Of course, these changes are all going to impact the way we vacation at the Most Magical Place on Earth, but overall, things are going to be just as convenient and enjoyable as they possible can be for those who choose to vacation during these unprecedented times.
