PHOTOS – Beautiful Holiday Decorations Arrive at Disney’s Boardwalk Resort

It’s time again to come take a stroll with us to view some more holiday decorations. This time we’re at Disney’s Boardwalk Resort. The cheery atmosphere of this resort is elevated this time of year. There is so much whimsy in the décor and ornaments. The lobby here is a little small compared to other grand lobbies like at Animal Kingdom Lodge and Wilderness Lodge. But there is so much packed into the space during the holidays without it feeling cramped in the lobby. Part of this is thanks to the resort’s Christmas tree actually being outside.

In the courtyard, facing out onto the boardwalk itself, the resort’s Christmas tree stands proudly. It is a nice touch to have this brightly colored and warmly lit tree out on the boardwalk for all to see. It adds to the wonderful energy of this area. Thanks to Ivonne (@servoisnaked on Twitter and Instagram) on our team for these great photos.

Have you stayed at Disney’s Boardwalk for the holidays? What resort is your favorite this time of year?

#DisneyMagicMoments: Cooking Up the Magic — Up Your Thanksgiving Leftover Game with Our Recipe for Ham Sliders with Pineapple Cherry Jam

For many of us, Thanksgiving leftovers are as much a part of the holiday as the meal itself. But plain ham or turkey sandwiches can get old fast – real fast!

I checked our files for fun Disney recipes that will take your Thanksgiving leftovers up a notch and are so delicious your family will crave year-round!

Our recipe today is Ham Sliders with Pineapple Cherry Jam. Offered during past Disney California Adventure Festival of Holidays at Disneyland Resort, it is the yummy Pineapple Cherry Jam that takes this seemingly simple slider to the next level. (Note to the cook – be sure to reserve some of the tasty jam to spread on warm buttered toast for a morning treat. You deserve it!)

Check back tomorrow for another recipe that is a fun remix of traditional Thanksgiving leftovers!

#DisneyMagicMoments: Cooking Up the Magic — Up Your Thanksgiving Leftover Game with Our Recipe for Ham Sliders with Pineapple Cherry Jam #DisneyMagicMoments: Cooking Up the Magic at Home — Up Your Thanksgiving Leftover Game with Our Recipe for Ham Sliders with Pineapple Cherry Jam

HOLIDAY HAM SLIDER WITH PINEAPPLE CHERRY JAM
Makes 8

PINEAPPLE CHERRY JAM

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 white onion, diced
  • 1 fresh pineapple, cored and diced
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup dried cherries
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • Coarse salt, to taste

HAM SLIDER

  • 8 brioche buns
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1 1/2 pounds Applewood smoked ham, sliced medium thickness

FOR PINEAPPLE CHERRY JAM:

  1. Melt butter in medium saucepan. Add onion and cook for 5 minutes, or until translucent.
  2. Add pineapple, vinegar and sugar; cook on low heat for 45 minutes, until vinegar and pineapple juices are reduced and pineapple begins to break down.
  3. Stir in cherries and mustard; season with salt.
  4. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

FOR HAM SLIDER:

  1. Preheat griddle or skillet over medium heat. Cut brioche buns in half and spread butter on cut side. Toast on hot griddle for 1 minute, or until golden brown.
  2. Heat a sauté pan over medium heat and warm ham.
  3. Evenly divide ham on warm brioche buns and top with jam.

Cook’s Note: Refrigerate any leftover jam—it’s delicious spread on warm buttered toast.

Note: Always use caution when handling sharp objects and hot contents. Please supervise children who are helping or nearby. This recipe has been converted from a larger quantity in the restaurant kitchens. The flavor profile may vary from the restaurant’s version.

#DisneyMagicMoments: Disney Chefs Serving up Extra Holiday Magic This Thanksgiving Thanks to Wishing Well Coins

Thanksgiving is well-known for being filled with love and appreciation as loved ones come together to express what they’re most thankful for. And while this year’s holiday will be a little different, one thing remains just as prevalent and fills me with immense gratitude: the support our culinary cast members give to Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida—an organization that provides housing, emergency services and diversion for local homeless men, women and children.

For more than 20 years, our culinary teams have supported Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida by providing freshly-prepared meals to feed the nearly 650 residents who call the Coalition home—including on Thanksgiving Day.

Even though this year’s holiday meal serve will be done a little differently, Chef James and his culinary team are carrying on the tradition and whipping up a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal complete with all the classic fixings — roasted turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, stuffing, salad, rolls, cranberry sauce and dessert.

And to help the Coalition with their modified meal serve, the Walt Disney World team is also donating hundreds of to-go containers and $20,000 collected from a very special place at Walt Disney World Resort: our fountains! Every year, thousands of guests toss coins into fountains at our Resort and make a wish, and this year the funds collected from those fountains are being given to the Coalition to help make their annual Thanksgiving meal service possible.

As you begin your own meal planning, Chef James is sharing some of his personal favorite ingredients to spice up classic Thanksgiving dishes, inspired by the delicious food he and his team are preparing for the Coalition to serve on Thursday. Check out the graphic below for his Turkey Day Tips — we hope these add a little pixie dust to your holiday meals this year!

Tony’s Town Square: A Must-Skip Meal

Pasta is one of those dishes that feels like it should be impossible to mess up — and yet I haven’t met a person who hasn’t had a horrible pasta dish in their life. My standards for a decent pasta meal at Disney aren’t all that high. I’d be satisfied with Olive Garden quality. Given that Olive Garden is able to mass produce decent enough food consistently around the country (including in Grand Forks, ND), I would expect that Disney could provide comparable quality.

And so, we sent our intrepid reviewer Chrissy to try out Tony’s Town Square at Magic Kingdom.

Before I go further, I want in writing — Chrissy, I’m so sorry.

In my view, Tony’s Town Square is one of the greatest lost opportunities at Walt Disney World. The location is fantastic–right on Main Street. In months when outdoor seating is a viable option in Florida, the porch area offers a wonderful view of people going by and the current character cavalcades that pass by frequently. Inside, the Lady and the Tramp theme isn’t so over the top that it is gaudy. The service there is excellent. But good service can only get you so far. The food has to be at least good. I’m not looking for a five-diamond restaurant. I’m looking for Olive Garden in a theme park.

Our readers give Tony’s Town Square a 74% thumbs up, placing it at 92 of 105 sit-down restaurants, or the bottom 13% of places to get a sit-down meal at Walt Disney World. (We’ve received 66 ratings since Walt Disney World has reopened, and that has put it at 82% thumbs up, compared with the 74% from more than 800 ratings over the past two years, showing that it isn’t a case of being able to say the experience was poor because of some sort of 2020 syndrome.)

The menu selections are what you’d expect: spaghetti, fettuccine, pizza. You can find the information you need about this, and any other restaurant at Walt Disney World, in the TouringPlans Lines app.

Tony’s Town Square: A Must-Skip Meal

For her meal, Chrissy ordered the garden salad and the chicken parmesan.

One positive of Tony’s Town Square is that it is one of few places at Walt Disney World that serves free bread with the meal. The bread was fine–crunchy and enough to take the edge off while you wait for your food.

Likewise the garden salad (mixed greens, balsamic dressing, olive medley, marinated artichokes, tomato, and shaved rainbow carrots, $12.00) was good. The vegetables were fresh and the dressing was delicious.

Tony’s Town Square: A Must-Skip Meal

At $12, it felt a bit overpriced, but if they sold the dressing, we’d pay $12 to take a bottle home. By far, the salad dressing was the best part of the meal.

But then there’s the main dish — the chicken parmesan at $26.

Tony’s Town Square: A Must-Skip Meal

The presentation was lovely, and although I had concerns from the photos about the spaghetti underneath, Chrissy assured me that it was “fine”. That said, the chicken itself was so salty that she wasn’t able to eat much of it. Although we went in with low expectations and would have been satisfied with Olive Garden, this wasn’t good at all.  It was, in her words “bad, bad”. In other words, it couldn’t even meet the low standards we had for it.

In the past, sponsorship agreements have limited what could be done with the quality of food at Tony’s Town Square, but without sponsorship agreements in place, I don’t think it is unrealistic to say that Disney should be able to mass produce Italian food at the same quality as Olive Garden. The fact that they consistently have challenges producing that same quality — and still have a $10 for the entree plus the lack of a free salad — puts Tony’s Town Square squarely in the category of a restaurant to skip.

If you’re looking for another sit-down meal in Magic Kingdom, a personal favorite is Liberty Tree Tavern. For sit-down Italian, save those calories for a trip to EPCOT to visit Tutto Italia.

To leave this on a happy note, however, earlier in the week Chrissy was at the Contemporary Resort and ordered the turkey pasta marinara off the kids’ menu at Contempo Cafe. For $7.49, this meal also comes with two kids sides (a Danimals smoothie, grapes, apple slices, etc.) and a bottle of water or a milk.

Tony’s Town Square: A Must-Skip Meal

The pasta was cooked perfectly, the sauce was flavorful and full of ground turkey, and the portion size was very filling for such a reasonable price.

In short, if Disney can make a solid dish like this on the kids’ menu at a quick-service restaurant, there is no reason why Tony’s can’t produce similar quality. We’re hopeful that someday this will be the case, but until then, I guess it will be my karma to try it again the next time we need a review.

What are your thoughts on Tony’s Town Square? Was this review too harsh? Not harsh enough? Let us know what you think in the comments.
