#DisneyMagicMoments: A Conversation About Cars Land, Motoring into Nine Years at Disneyland Resort

In June 2012, the reimagining of Disney California Adventure park culminated with the opening of Cars Land, an extraordinary and one-of-a-kind experience that transports guests to Radiator Springs and the world of Disney and Pixar’s “Cars.”

Bringing this well-loved story from the screen to reality took the hearts, minds and talents of an incredible team. In this Behind the Magic video, Kathy Mangum, executive producer of Cars Land, and Roger Gould, Pixar’s creative director for theme parks, pull over to discuss Cars Land’s unique evolution, rich, vibrant story and what it was like to help dream up this special land.

Cars Land continues to touch the hearts of so many, and combine creativity, innovation and technology, as only Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar can do. We can’t wait for guests to follow Route 66 into Radiator Springs, once again. In the meantime, celebrate the road ahead with this special look at Cars Land.

Ka-chow!

FIRST® Global Innovation Award Presented by Disney Culminates This Week in Virtual Competition

The Walt Disney Company has been a proud supporter of FIRST, the world’s leading youth-serving nonprofit advancing STEM education, for over 25 years. Disney has a long history of innovating with technology to bring beloved characters and stories to life in more imaginative and immersive ways and we are committed to leveraging our expertise to provide inspiration and opportunity to the next generation of innovators.

This week, FIRST’s annual Global Innovation Award will feature 20 semi-finalist teams (out of 40,000 possible teams representing 100 countries), who have worked together all year during the FIRST RISE, powered by Star Wars: Force for Change season in hands-on, team-based robotics challenges, embodying the spirit of Disney innovation and developing the skills they need to create the futures they imagine. Students will explore what it means to be an innovator, and find solutions for today’s societal problems to impact the world for generations to come.

FIRST LEGO League Challenge (students ages 9-16) teams have been tasked with developing an Innovation Project — identifying unique solutions in their community and reimagining how to make their city or town a better place for everyone. Drawing inspiration from the community of Black Spire Outpost found at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Walt Disney Imagineering will be presenting unique educational opportunities during the event featuring behind the scenes looks at the development of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance given by Walt Disney Imagineers.

NBA Officially Resuming Season at Walt Disney World

It is officially official. The NBA will be finishing its 2019-20 season at the Walt Disney World Resort. The season will resume in July with team practices and games played at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in the Arena, HP Field House and Visa Athletic Center.

The NBA and the NBPA confirmed an agreement on health and safety protocols that will govern the resumption of the season. The program, which addresses risks related to coronavirus, focuses on the well-being of players, coaches, officials and staff.

Game play will resume on July 30 with 22 teams with the eight teams in each conference that have the highest current winning percentages and the six teams currently within six games of the eighth seed in either conference competing to determine seeding for the NBA Playoffs. The playoffs will feature 16 teams and the NBA Finals will end no later than October 13. Based on current guidelines, all games will be held without spectators.

“We have worked together with the Players Association to establish a restart plan that prioritizes health and safety, preserves competitive fairness and provides a platform to address social justice issues,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “We are grateful to our longtime collaborator Disney for its role in playing host and making this return to play possible, and we also thank the public health officials and infectious disease specialists who helped guide the creation of comprehensive medical protocols and protections.”

“We’re glad to be able to provide a unique venue where the NBA can resume its season at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “We look forward to welcoming the players, coaches and staff to Walt Disney World Resort as they prepare for the exciting return of professional basketball.”

The NBA players will be staying at one of three Walt Disney World Resort Hotels and the selection of hotels that they will be staying at is based on their seeding. Hotels that players will be staying at include Gran Destino Tower, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, and Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. More details can be found here.
