PHOTOS – EPCOT Prepares for Festival of the Holidays

EPCOT is late to the party every year, but soon the International Festival of the Holidays will start. This celebration of the holidays showcases how the holiday season is celebrated around the world. Through delectable holiday dishes, festive drinks, and spectacular decorations, the holiday season is celebrated globally at EPCOT. The Festival of the Holidays begins this Friday, November 27, 2020. And, preparations are underway for the festival to begin. A new photo opportunity with Mickey and friends in a classic holiday card greeting welcomes guests to the festival. Food and Wine Festival booths are now converted to Holiday Kitchens.

#DisneyMagicMoments: Disney Chefs Serving up Extra Holiday Magic This Thanksgiving Thanks to Wishing Well Coins

Thanksgiving is well-known for being filled with love and appreciation as loved ones come together to express what they’re most thankful for. And while this year’s holiday will be a little different, one thing remains just as prevalent and fills me with immense gratitude: the support our culinary cast members give to Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida—an organization that provides housing, emergency services and diversion for local homeless men, women and children.

For more than 20 years, our culinary teams have supported Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida by providing freshly-prepared meals to feed the nearly 650 residents who call the Coalition home—including on Thanksgiving Day.

Even though this year’s holiday meal serve will be done a little differently, Chef James and his culinary team are carrying on the tradition and whipping up a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal complete with all the classic fixings — roasted turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, stuffing, salad, rolls, cranberry sauce and dessert.

And to help the Coalition with their modified meal serve, the Walt Disney World team is also donating hundreds of to-go containers and $20,000 collected from a very special place at Walt Disney World Resort: our fountains! Every year, thousands of guests toss coins into fountains at our Resort and make a wish, and this year the funds collected from those fountains are being given to the Coalition to help make their annual Thanksgiving meal service possible.

As you begin your own meal planning, Chef James is sharing some of his personal favorite ingredients to spice up classic Thanksgiving dishes, inspired by the delicious food he and his team are preparing for the Coalition to serve on Thursday. Check out the graphic below for his Turkey Day Tips — we hope these add a little pixie dust to your holiday meals this year!

Tony’s Town Square: A Must-Skip Meal

Pasta is one of those dishes that feels like it should be impossible to mess up — and yet I haven’t met a person who hasn’t had a horrible pasta dish in their life. My standards for a decent pasta meal at Disney aren’t all that high. I’d be satisfied with Olive Garden quality. Given that Olive Garden is able to mass produce decent enough food consistently around the country (including in Grand Forks, ND), I would expect that Disney could provide comparable quality.

And so, we sent our intrepid reviewer Chrissy to try out Tony’s Town Square at Magic Kingdom.

Before I go further, I want in writing — Chrissy, I’m so sorry.

In my view, Tony’s Town Square is one of the greatest lost opportunities at Walt Disney World. The location is fantastic–right on Main Street. In months when outdoor seating is a viable option in Florida, the porch area offers a wonderful view of people going by and the current character cavalcades that pass by frequently. Inside, the Lady and the Tramp theme isn’t so over the top that it is gaudy. The service there is excellent. But good service can only get you so far. The food has to be at least good. I’m not looking for a five-diamond restaurant. I’m looking for Olive Garden in a theme park.

Our readers give Tony’s Town Square a 74% thumbs up, placing it at 92 of 105 sit-down restaurants, or the bottom 13% of places to get a sit-down meal at Walt Disney World. (We’ve received 66 ratings since Walt Disney World has reopened, and that has put it at 82% thumbs up, compared with the 74% from more than 800 ratings over the past two years, showing that it isn’t a case of being able to say the experience was poor because of some sort of 2020 syndrome.)

The menu selections are what you’d expect: spaghetti, fettuccine, pizza. You can find the information you need about this, and any other restaurant at Walt Disney World, in the TouringPlans Lines app.

Tony’s Town Square: A Must-Skip Meal

For her meal, Chrissy ordered the garden salad and the chicken parmesan.

One positive of Tony’s Town Square is that it is one of few places at Walt Disney World that serves free bread with the meal. The bread was fine–crunchy and enough to take the edge off while you wait for your food.

Tony’s Town Square: A Must-Skip Meal

Likewise the garden salad (mixed greens, balsamic dressing, olive medley, marinated artichokes, tomato, and shaved rainbow carrots, $12.00) was good. The vegetables were fresh and the dressing was delicious.

Tony’s Town Square: A Must-Skip Meal

At $12, it felt a bit overpriced, but if they sold the dressing, we’d pay $12 to take a bottle home. By far, the salad dressing was the best part of the meal.

But then there’s the main dish — the chicken parmesan at $26.

Tony’s Town Square: A Must-Skip Meal

The presentation was lovely, and although I had concerns from the photos about the spaghetti underneath, Chrissy assured me that it was “fine”. That said, the chicken itself was so salty that she wasn’t able to eat much of it. Although we went in with low expectations and would have been satisfied with Olive Garden, this wasn’t good at all.  It was, in her words “bad, bad”. In other words, it couldn’t even meet the low standards we had for it.

In the past, sponsorship agreements have limited what could be done with the quality of food at Tony’s Town Square, but without sponsorship agreements in place, I don’t think it is unrealistic to say that Disney should be able to mass produce Italian food at the same quality as Olive Garden. The fact that they consistently have challenges producing that same quality — and still have a $10 for the entree plus the lack of a free salad — puts Tony’s Town Square squarely in the category of a restaurant to skip.

If you’re looking for another sit-down meal in Magic Kingdom, a personal favorite is Liberty Tree Tavern. For sit-down Italian, save those calories for a trip to EPCOT to visit Tutto Italia.

To leave this on a happy note, however, earlier in the week Chrissy was at the Contemporary Resort and ordered the turkey pasta marinara off the kids’ menu at Contempo Cafe. For $7.49, this meal also comes with two kids sides (a Danimals smoothie, grapes, apple slices, etc.) and a bottle of water or a milk.

Tony’s Town Square: A Must-Skip Meal

The pasta was cooked perfectly, the sauce was flavorful and full of ground turkey, and the portion size was very filling for such a reasonable price.

In short, if Disney can make a solid dish like this on the kids’ menu at a quick-service restaurant, there is no reason why Tony’s can’t produce similar quality. We’re hopeful that someday this will be the case, but until then, I guess it will be my karma to try it again the next time we need a review.

What are your thoughts on Tony’s Town Square? Was this review too harsh? Not harsh enough? Let us know what you think in the comments.

#DisneyMagicMoments: Celebrating Wondrous Animal Births and Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment Team this Thanksgiving Season

Thanksgiving is a day of gratitude. At Walt Disney World Resort, among the many things we’re thankful for are the 3,000 animal births and hatchings that happened in 2020, including more than 2,500 invertebrates (such as insects and snails). From the tiniest of snails (more than 1,000 to be exact) to charismatic mammals such as a 150-pound endangered white rhinoceros, we have an abundance of thankfulness this year.

Births and hatchings are exciting for our devoted Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment team, and for our theme park guests who can see these new additions up close and personal in their habitats. I am especially proud knowing many of these new residents offer hope for the future of their respective species. Each represents another success of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plans.

I am so proud and thankful for the entire team that makes it all happen. So, during this Thanksgiving season, let’s reflect on the miracle of birth and the magic of nature with a look at some of the adorable baby animals that joined our Disney family this year.

#DisneyMagicMoments: Celebrating Wondrous Animal Births and Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment Team this Thanksgiving Season Male white rhinoceros at Disney's Animal Kingdom

The newest addition to the Disney’s Animal Kingdom family, born Oct 25, is our male white rhinoceros, (one of the many births through one of the Species Survival Plans.) This yet-to-be-named little one is already weighing in at more than 200 pounds and is quite a ball of energy. You may remember his mom and dad, Kendi and Dugan, whose love story we followed on “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom,” a Disney+ original series streaming now. We expect him to join the rest of the crash on the Kilimanjaro Safaris savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park early next year.

You’re not seeing double – we had two female Masai giraffe born only a month apart this year. Maple (left) got her name after her keepers noticed that one of the spots on her skin is shaped like a maple leaf. And Zella (right) has a name that means “beautiful girl who knows the path” in Slavic and African languages. Both little girls will make their debut on the savanna any day now.

#DisneyMagicMoments: Celebrating Wondrous Animal Births and Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment Team this Thanksgiving Season A baby Babirusa named Kirana at Disney's Animal Kingdom

A first for our team, the baby BabirusaKirana, which translates to “Sunbeam” in Indonesian, can be seen daily in the Oasis at the park. This time last year, the team was hard at work introducing Betty and Mentari, parents of little Kirana, while cameras rolled for “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

We’ve had more than 1,000 Partula Snails this year! These little ones actually produce one offspring every 4-6 weeks and can reproduce without a partner. The baby reaches maturity between three and six months and can start producing their own offspring. That’s a lot of snails!

#DisneyMagicMoments: Celebrating Wondrous Animal Births and Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment Team this Thanksgiving Season Zebra at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Whether you visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park or Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, you’re likely to see a young zebra. We’ve been lucky enough to have five born this year between the two locations. You can see more in the third episode of “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom,” when one of our babies explores a new section of the savanna with his mom.

#DisneyMagicMoments: Celebrating Wondrous Animal Births and Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment Team this Thanksgiving Season Banggai cardinalfish at EPCOT

Over at The Seas with Nemo & Friends at EPCOT, the team cares for a variety of aquatic animals including these little Banggai cardinalfish. These animals are fully grown at just 3 inches. And did you know, the male Banggai are actually the ones who carry the eggs in their mouth until they hatch! They can usually hold about 60 eggs at once.

#DisneyMagicMoments: Celebrating Wondrous Animal Births and Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment Team this Thanksgiving Season Violet, a horse at Tri-Circle D Ranch at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort

Right as we were opening the new Tri-Circle D Ranch at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, we welcomed little Violet. She’s doing great and enjoying time in the pasture with her equine bestie Dory. She can be seen at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. daily.

Meet aardvark Karanga. Her name means “peanut” in Swahli and honors her mother who’s named Peanut. Karanga’s birth represents another first for Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

And who can forget Olive, the littlest mandrill in the troop. She stole the hearts of many as she tried a blueberry for the first time in September. Her keepers say she’s becoming much more independent from mom, Scarlet, routinely climbing in the trees solo or exploring more and more on her own. She has also found a willing playmate in her grandmother, Snow.

You can learn more about the rare and beautiful animals that call Disney home and meet the amazing teams who care for them by watching National Geographic’s “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom.” The Disney+ original series is streaming now. To learn more about the animals in our care and what we’re doing to save their counterparts in the wild, visit DisneyAnimals.com.
