#DisneyMagicMoments: Go Behind the Magic of Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa

Aloha!

This week, Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa began welcoming guests once again to our vacation paradise in beautiful Ko Olina, Hawai’i. As guests begin floating along the Waikolohoe Valley lazy river we are reminiscing about how Aulani Resort became a magical destination.

In honor of the resort’s reopening, check out the video below where Jeanette Lomboy, Creative Executive for Aulani Resort for Walt Disney Imagineering and Shelby Jiggetts-Tivony, Vice President of Creative and Advanced Development for Disney Parks and Entertainment takes us back to the creation of a resort that combines the wonder of Disney with the beauty of Hawai’i in one legendary vacation destination.

You will hear first-hand details about how they worked closely with the community to learn about Hawaii’s rich cultural heritage and incorporated elements important to the Hawaiian people including ‘ohana (family), storytelling and magic into the planning. They describe the legend of the Menehune, secrets to discover at the resort, the role of Aunty and Uncle and much more that you will discover at Aulani Resort.

Disney and Lucasfilm Join Forces with FIRST to Continue Inspiring the Next Generation of Heroes and Innovators

Recently, Lucasfilm and Disney announced that they are partnering up with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), the global nonprofit organization, once again for the 2020-2021 youth robotics season, FIRST GAME CHANGERS powered by Star Wars: Force for Change. The announcement video features some familiar faces from the Star Wars universe that you just might recognize. In this year’s sports and fitness-themed season, students around the world will compete in robotics challenges, exploring what it means to. Be “forces for change” by revolutionizing the way we play and move so people of all abilities and skill levels can participate.

The ongoing collaboration with FIRST, a global community that reaches more than 679,000 students in over 100 countries, enables Disney and Lucasfilm to expand access to science, technology, engineering and math learning to more young people around the world to help them envision a brighter, more inclusive future.

The Star Wars: Force for Change philanthropic initiative provides students with financial, in-kind and mentorship resources. For more than two decades, Walt Disney Imagineering has provided sponsorship and mentorship to FIRST with unique educational opportunities that feature Star Wars characters, stories and experiences, some even inspired by the adventures found inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort.

For more updates on what Disney and Lucasfilm will do in partnership with FIRST for the 2020-2021 season, stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog!

What Are the Disney World Hotel Gyms Like Now?

While many Walt Disney World resort amenities have been temporarily discontinued, the gyms at the deluxe hotels are open – and there are a number of COVID-era safety measures in place.

During a recent stay at Saratoga Springs, I visited the hotel gym four times. I was the only person in the facility during three of those times. The fourth time, there was one other guest there too. The Saratoga gym is quite large, so it was easy to keep our distance from each other. Other hotel gyms are smaller, making social distancing less reliable.

The gym building at Saratoga, which is normally open during the day, is perpetually locked. You can open it with your resort room key. There are no other guests allowed inside.

There is a water bubbler for guest use. The nearby stack of paper cups is individually plastic wrapped.

Signage indicates that face coverings must be worn while working out.

There were plenty of towels available, but no attendant on site during any of my visits. There are disinfecting wipes and a hand sanitizer dispenser near the door.

A few of the weight machines have been moved further apart than usual, though cardio machines continue to be in close proximity to each other. Typical loose items like yoga mats had been removed. Otherwise, the gym looked much like normal.
