Could Disney World Ever Close Down Again? The Answer’s More Complicated Than You Might Think.

We’re coming to the end of Walt Disney World’s historic closure, and wow, what a roller coaster ride it’s been (and we’re not talking the fun kind).

Could Disney World Ever Close Down Again? The Answer’s More Complicated Than You Might Think.

Big Thunder Mountain

Disney World’s theme parks will be reopening soon with some significant changes, but many people are relieved to see any semblance of normalcy return, even if the parks look a little bit different than we remember. And yet, we’re wary. Could a closure like this happen again? As much as we’d like to say no, it’s a little more complicated than that. Take a look.

Disney will have more protocols in place for health crises, but that doesn’t mean they definitely won’t close.

Part of the reason the current closure has been so lengthy (more than 100 days!) is due to the fact that the current global health crisis is completely unprecedented. Disney has had to build protocols for the closure and reopening from the ground up. The last time a health crisis was this severe — during the the 1918 outbreak of Spanish Flu — the parks didn’t even exist. (Walt Disney was just 17 at the time and actually contracted and survived the virus.)

Once we emerge from this current closure, it does mean that we may be better prepared in the future. If there is a next time, the company can use what they learned during this crisis to help craft the response to the next one. Depending on the nature of the next health crisis, this could help to shorten a closure or potentially avoid one altogether.

Unfortunately, “the next crisis” is something we do have to worry about, according to Time. This won’t necessarily be the last pandemic in our lifetime. Part of what makes a virus turn into a pandemic is a lack of sufficient treatment or cure. If a future illness can spread effectively despite the health measures that Disney has implemented, it could force another closure as the world contends with it.

In fact, even the path of the current pandemic is uncertain. With case numbers on the rise, especially in Florida, another set of closures and restrictions is not impossible. We have already seen Disneyland’s proposed theme park reopening delayed. The fate of Disney World’s eventual reopening comes down to both governmental guidelines and whether or not Disney can effectively keep guests and cast members safe given the current state of the pandemic.

Health crises aren’t the only situation we need to worry about.

Although this closure has been the longest by far, Disney World has closed before for other reasons. It’s possible we’ll see the parks close again for a non-health-related situation. For instance, Disney World closed in response to the terror attacks on 9/11 because of concern that the parks could be a target. If there is ever such a threat to guest safety, Disney World will not remain open.

Hurricane Skies in Disney World’s Epcot

Mother Nature poses another threat to Disney World’s ability to stay open. Hurricanes are a pretty regular cause for shutting Disney down. Even with a well-crafted hurricane policy, sometimes it’s safer if the parks close when a particularly inclement storm comes through, to ensure the safety of Cast Members and guests. In fact, Florida is facing an especially active hurricane season this year. It’s feasible that Disney will need to close if any of these storms threaten the area.

So, yes, Disney World might close down again — but they might be a little more prepared for crises in the future.

It can definitely feel frustrating that the parks could close again in the future, especially when this closure has been so trying. It is the reality though. Luckily, going forward, Disney will have options to turn to in the event of a similar crisis. The current situation means that new health measures and long-term closure protocols are now a part of the precedent: Disney now has a playbook.

Closed Path to Epcot

In fact, it’s possible Disney already has teams working on what-if scenarios in the event that this ever happens again! As disappointing as they may be, closures can be necessary to keep guests and cast members safe. Whatever happens, Disney Food Blog will be here to keep you up to date on all the latest at Disney World.

Walt Disney World Cast Members Prepare for Opening with Health and Safety as a Focus

With just eight days until we reopen our first theme parks at  Walt Disney World Resort, tens of thousands of cast members have been straightening up our nametags (and grabbing our face coverings!) as we begin to return to work. As we count down to the phased reopening of our theme parks, we’re looking forward to welcoming our fellow cast members home to begin training in preparation for reopening.

And this week, that special moment finally arrived for a group of our theme park cast members as they put on their nametags, reunited with their work locations and fellow cast, and began their first days of training to learn new health and safety protocols. With the return of every cast member, and at the conclusion of every training session, you can feel how passionate and ready the team is as we get one step closer to the first theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort welcoming guests home.

Many of us are returning to places that look and feel a little different, and collectively, we’re dedicating thousands of hours to health and safety training because we know that it will take all of us working together to responsibly create the magic once again.

Though our world may look a little different as we return to familiar and cherished places, we’re eager to open the gates and navigate this new world together with health and safety top of mind. Take a look at some of the first special moments as cast returned to their favorite parks and began prepping to welcome guests home with a smile in their eyes.

Ford is partnering with Disney to unveil all new Bronco SUVs on July 13th

Ford is partnering with Disney to unveil all new Bronco SUVs on July 13th Ford Disney Bronco

Ford Motor Company will reveal the all-new Ford Bronco 4×4 family on Monday, July 13 across Disney’s Media Networks – marking the first-ever, prime-time product reveal roadblock across Disney’s broadcast, cable, digital and streaming properties, including ABC, ESPN, National Geographic and Hulu.

“Ford Bronco is an icon that has captured people’s imaginations and inspired them to explore the most remote corners of America and the world since the 1960s,” said Jim Farley, Ford’s chief operating officer. “As a new era for Bronco begins, we’re proud to tap the strengths of epic adventurers like Jimmy Chin and Disney storytellers to help bring Bronco to life and inspire millions of people to get out into the wild.”

Ford initially planned to reveal its all-new Bronco 4×4 SUV lineup in June at the revamped, outdoor-inspired North American International Auto Show in Detroit. After the coronavirus pandemic prompted auto show organizers to cancel the show for 2020, the Ford team reconceived the reveal strategy, aiming to pull in an even broader audience for its hotly anticipated Bronco debut.

The Bronco reveal marks the first time Disney CreativeWorks, Disney’s award-winning creative agency, is deploying custom branded content, across multiple networks during prime time on ABC, ESPN and National Geographic. Each film will air on the respective networks on Monday, July 13, during the first commercial break in the 8:00 p.m. ET hour. All three films will be available to viewers on Hulu starting Tuesday, July 14.

“At Disney, we take pride in creating culture and leveraging our unrivaled portfolio of brands to authentically and creatively tell stories during meaningful moments,” said Rita Ferro, president, Disney Advertising Sales. “With Ford, we’re reimagining what a product reveal can look like by drawing upon our best-in-class sports, entertainment and streaming brands to bring the new Bronco family to life in a way that honors its heritage and gives viewers an unforgettable experience.”

Here’s how each network’s custom film will reveal the all-new Bronco family:

  • ABC
    • Bronco will be featured in a 3-minute film starring country music singer Kip Moore during “CMA Best of Fest,” the Country Music Association’s three-hour concert experience, airing Monday, July 13 (8:00–11:00 p.m. ET).
  • ESPN
    • Film featuring a different Bronco model and professional climber Brooke Raboutou will air during “SportsCenter.”
  • National Geographic
    • Academy Award-winning director and acclaimed cinematographer, photographer and professional climber Jimmy Chin will spotlight another Bronco during “National Parks: Yosemite.” Additionally, Chin will judge a hashtag challenge contest and appear in an Instagram Story featuring the Bronco on NatGeo’s Instagram account.
  • Hulu
    • On Tuesday, July 14, all three custom films will be available on demand on Hulu. The films will be available to viewers through interactive ad formats, and within a curated collection of outdoor and survival-themed content aligned with the Bronco lifestyle.
  • Ford Channels
    • In addition to the films created for ABC, ESPN and National Geographic, Ford also will share additional special content with fans on its YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter channels starting at 8:00 p.m. ET on July 13 – including additional details on the performance strengths of each new Bronco model.

Fans can reserve their Bronco model for $100 each, starting Monday, July 13 at 8:00 p.m. ET at ford.com.

Until the July 13 reveal, Ford Bronco fans can follow Bronco’s latest news and the countdown to reveal with @FordBronco on Instagram.

In Case You Missed It: News and Rumors – Week of July 3, 2020

Happy #Hamilfilm day! Will you be watching the musical on Disney+ today? Also, we wish you a very Happy 4th of July weekend. Please remember to stay socially distanced this weekend!

This week, see what Cast Members did to get ready for returning to work at Walt Disney World, find out when Mulan will be hitting theaters (maybe), and more.

In Case You Missed It – Disney and Universal Orlando News and Rumors

Walt Disney World and the hotel industry lobby just won a sweeping court victory that could save Disney and other hotel companies, but cost cities, counties and schools millions of dollars a year in property taxes.

Levy Restaurants filed notices with the state of Florida last week, saying it will lay off workers at Paddlefish and Terralina Crafted Italian effective August 1.

Disney has officially postponed Destination D for this year.

Ok….I’ll admit. I may have gotten a little teary eyed at the end of this video. This was super well done. Thank you Cast Members. We look forward to seeing you soon!

To prepare for Hamilton, Jimmy Fallon did what he does best. He brought together The Roots and the original cast of the musical for another installment of “At Home Instruments

Oh, I can already tell you. This movie, Soul, is going to wreck me. I’m gonna need a whole box of tissues for this one and I don’t even know if that will be enough based on this trailer.

Mulan has once again been delayed due to coronavirus concerns. It will now come out in August.

Margo Robbie is now attached to a new, female-fronted Pirates of the Caribbean for Disney.

We all love those episodes of TV shows where they go to a Disney destination. Here’s a round up and where you can watch them. (So the new one to me was the Blossom one…)

Whoa! In a surprise move, Disney Plus announced a new visual album from Beyoncé — “Black Is King,” will premiere globally on Disney+ on July 31.
