#DisneyMagicMoments: Behind the Camera – Spaceship Earth Lights Up the Night at EPCOT for the First Time

Prior to the grand opening of EPCOT back in 1982, I was patiently waiting to see Spaceship Earth at night. We all knew even then what an iconic symbol that massive geosphere would be for Walt Disney World Resort, but I wanted to see it for myself.

It did not disappoint. I took this photo the very first time Spaceship Earth lit up at night, and the way the light bounced off the geodesic panels was amazing (then and now). And then to top it off, we had a fantastic full moon that night, as well – a bit of Disney magic! So to capture both those icons in all their glory in one image, I decided to try using a multiple exposure technique.

#DisneyMagicMoments: Behind the Camera – Spaceship Earth Lights Up the Night at EPCOT for the First Time Spaceship Earth lights up the night at EPCOT for the first time in 1982

Back then, we didn’t have digital imaging software (or digital cameras, for that matter). If I wanted a multiple exposure, I had to create it in the camera itself on a single frame of film – the definition of “old school.” Working on a tripod, I attached a super-telephoto 400mm lens to the camera to capture the moon. Then, I pressed a button on the camera that would not advance the film when I clicked the shutter. I then switched back to a wide-angle lens to capture Spaceship Earth on that same frame.

Because it was all on film, I had no idea if it worked until I returned to my darkroom the next day and developed the shot. Wow, how times have changed! Lucky for me, this experiment turned out pretty well, and proved to me just how fantastic Disney icons look under celestial bodies – a motif I’ve played with over the course of my nearly four decades as a Disney photographer.

News: Face Masks Are Now Required Citywide in Anaheim, California

As Downtown Disney gets ready to welcome back guests on July 9th, the reopening of Disneyland’s theme parks and hotels have been pushed back.

News: Face Masks Are Now Required Citywide in Anaheim, California

Chocolate-Vanilla Twist Soft Serve!

And now, the city of Anaheim (where Disneyland Resort is located) has just issued a citywide face-covering requirement for all residents and visitors.

Due to a surge in cases, New Jersey and New York added California to their travel advisory yesterday. The executive order requires travelers to complete a 2-week self-quarantine when returning from a state with a high infection rate. Now, Anaheim has issued a citywide face-covering requirement. According to Anaheim’s website, the new order requires the use of face coverings:

  • Inside and in line for any indoor public space
  • At any healthcare setting
  • Using public transit or rideshare
  • At workplaces in common areas
  • For any food service, packaging or distribution
  • In any room or enclosed area where you’re unable to distance from those outside your own household.
  • Outside when within six feet of others

The website also states those with special considerations would be exempt, and face coverings are not required in certain situations:

  • Children younger than 2
  • Those with health, mental or developmental considerations
  • Those who face workplace risks from wearing a face covering
  • Medical treatments where removal is necessary
  • While eating or drinking
  • While exercising outdoors or indoors when distanced from others
  • While working outdoors when distanced
  • Those who are incarcerated

Orange County, Florida mandated face masks a few weeks ago and is also on New York and New Jersey’s travel advisory. At this time, the requirement doesn’t have an expiration date, but we’ll continue to provide you with more updates.

Disneyland and union Cast Members have reached an agreement about returning to work! Learn more details here!
