Disney Cruise Line News — Week of June 30, 2020

Sponsored by Storybook Destinations

Ahoy, mateys! I’m Heather, and I’ll be bringing you the up and coming on all things Disney Cruise Line. Welcome back again this week. Let’s see what’s new in the DCL world!

Here’s some good news – no new cancellations this week! Hooray!!!

And here’s some more good news if you have a cruise booked to sail before March 31, 2021. DCL has introduced a flexible cruising policy, which will allow guests to change the date on their cruise up until 15 days prior to the sail date, at no penalty! Of course there are some restrictions – this is only a date change, not a refund potential. Once you’ve changed the date to one in the future, there’s no changing your mind and going back to the original sail date. This policy will cover guests with previously booked sailings, as well as those that book new sailings by August 31, 2020. One major caveat – if you do move to a new date, and then need to cancel, the amount of the cancellation fee will be based off the original sail date.

This is pretty great news for those with an upcoming cruise who may not be so sure what they want to do. During these times of cancellations, paying for your cruise in full by the balance due date was a bit of a gamble. If you are paid in full and Disney cancels, that 125% future cruise credit is a nice tradeoff. But what if your cruise will indeed be headed out, and suddenly you aren’t feeling on board? How great that you can make that date change without the hefty monetary penalty! Kudos to Disney on initiating this policy!

Port Canaveral may not have guests and ships coming and going right now, but all is not dormant over on the coast. Cruise Terminal 8, probably better known as the DCL terminal, is bustling with construction as the planned improvements are full steam ahead. The Disney Cruise Line Blog posted a drone video of the work being done that was shared during the latest Board Disney Cruise Line News — Week of June 30, 2020 of Commissioners meeting. That canopy coverage for arriving guests is going to be oh so wonderful!

Speaking of wonderful…how about a recipe for a most wonderful and beloved DCL dessert? I’ll give you three guesses what it is….just kidding, you probably don’t need three! Of course it’s the one and only chocolate souffle! If you try your hand at making it at home, let us know how it turns out!

Thanks for joining me again this week. “Sea” you next time!

Gideon’s Bakehouse Construction Update from Disney Springs

The walls are up and construction is beginning on Gideon’s Bakehouse at Disney Springs!

Gideon’s Bakehouse Construction Update from Disney Springs

Anticipating to open later this year, Gideon’s is best known for small-batch, handmade, almost half-pound cookies (yes, you read that right, half-pound) and cakes. Not only does their size make these cookies so special, Gideon’s brings its own spin to cookie flavors like Peanut Butter Crisp, Cookies & Cream and my absolute favorite, Pistachio Toffee Dark Chocolate.

Gideon’s Bakehouse Construction Update from Disney Springs

Gideon’s plans to bring an expanded menu of cookie and cake slices to Disney Springs, plus add its own line of unique iced coffees, like the Original Peanut Butter Iced Coffee. Of course, guests can expect to find their favorite cookie flavors along with new and limited editions offered during special daily releases. The ever-popular Coffee Cake Cookie (previously only available one month a year) will be on sale every morning, with a Hot Cookie Hour each evening for those looking to cure a sweet tooth after dinner.

Gideon’s Bakehouse Construction Update from Disney Springs

“We’re also excited to bring more cake flavors to our new location, offering never-before-seen creations like our special line of Double Frosted Cakes.” Steve said. “There are more than a few secrets we have up our sleeves that you’ll just have to wait to see. It’s not Gideon’s if it isn’t a little dark and mysterious.” We aim to even make the wait in line entertaining by immersing everyone in a transformative environment that will share our story as guests progress toward the counter.”

The new location will be located in The Landing across from Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar.

Stay tuned to Chip and Co for progress update of this all-new Gideon’s Bakehouse at Disney Springs!

100+ Disney Springs Workers laid off at Paddlefish and Terralina

100+ Disney Springs Workers laid off at Paddlefish and Terralina Disney Springs

There’s some unfortunate news for Disney Springs employees who work at Paddlefish and Terralina Crafted Italian restaurants. Levy Restaurants filed notices with the state of Florida last week, saying it will lay off workers at Paddlefish and Terralina Crafted Italian effective August 1, 2020. According to the notices, 143 positions will be eliminated — with 87 at Paddlefish and 56 at Terralina Crafted Italian.

The majority of the positions being eliminated include servers, bartenders and cooks. Unfortunately, the remaining 128 employees at both restaurants will also face reduced hours. Levy Restaurants sent a notice to the state of Florida saying the layoffs are permanent. Dozens more employees at both restaurants will have their hours cut, according to the letter Levy Restaurants sent to the state.

“Given the continued unforeseen business circumstances created by recent sport league announcement that teams would not return to playing in front of fans for a number of months, and/or government directives requiring longer term cancellation of large events due to the Covid-19 pandemic, additional notice of job loss was not practicable,” the company said in its letter.

Levy Restaurants specializes in providing food and beverage to major entertainment and sports venues. So other venues besides the Disney Springs restaurants are also bring affected by the impact of COVID-19. The layoffs come a month after Disney reopened Disney Springs with reduced capacity and a number of new health and safety measures for guests.
