Recognizing National Safety Month at Disney Parks Around the World

This June marks National Safety Month – a month that acknowledges the importance of safety in the workplace, as well as in our communities, through education, leadership and advocacy.

At Disney, safety is an important tenet and it starts with our cast members. Our dedicated cast members are at the heart of every great Disney experience, and the secret to the magic. It’s for that reason that Disney’s Four Keys – including Safety, Courtesy, Show and Efficiency – were created to serve as a compass for our cast members to create happiness and serve others.

Safety is the first key as a reminder that it is a top priority in the decisions we make – both for our cast members, and for our guests. It’s a foundation that was introduced by Walt Disney himself many decades ago.

It takes a variety of highly talented team members in different roles, working together to promote a healthy and safe environment at our Disney Parks and stores. And as we continue with the phased reopening of our parks, resorts and stores around the world, we’re excited to introduce you to a just a few of these professionals who are helping shape, monitor and implement our enhanced health and safety measures. They’re working closely with industry groups, research universities and public health agencies to promote safe practices while we work, stay, and play at Disney parks, resorts and Disney stores.

Meet some of our team members

Recognizing National Safety Month at Disney Parks Around the World Dr. Pamela Hymel – Chief Medical Officer, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products

Dr. Pamela Hymel – Chief Medical Officer, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products

Dr. Pamela Hymel has been with Disney for nearly 10 years, serving as the Chief Medical Officer for Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, where she’s responsible for developing global occupational health and wellness strategy, as well as managing domestic occupational medicine clinics and programs, guest first aid services and wellness programs.

Dr. Hymel received her MD from Louisiana State University in New Orleans and a master’s in public health from Tulane University. From there, she went on to do her Internal Medicine and Occupational Medicine training at University of California, Irvine and is board certified in both areas.

“The programs I work on give me an opportunity to improve the health and wellness of our cast members,” said Dr. Hymel. “An example of an initiative we introduced at Disney is how our health and wellness team developed the Incredible Athlete pilots at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. The program really integrated physical conditioning instruction with education on sleep and nutrition for optimum performance and is designed to help prevent injuries from occurring. It is very rewarding to know we are helping our cast optimize their performance at home and at work.”

Recognizing National Safety Month at Disney Parks Around the World Katie Kelly – Vice President, Worldwide Safety Services

Katie Kelly – Vice President, Worldwide Safety Services

Katie Kelly began her Disney journey nearly 17 years ago as a professional intern. Now, she serves as the Vice President of Worldwide Safety Services for Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, where she’s responsible for developing and implementing safety programs that keep the wellness of cast members and guests top of mind.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and master’s degree in Engineering Management from University of Central Florida, she went on to become a licensed professional engineer in the states of Florida and California.

“The best part about working at Disney is that you get to share what you do with your kids,” said Kelly. “Seeing the joy that my kids have from visiting one of our theme parks is what drives my passion for the job. I want every one of our cast members to be able to experience that joy with their own family and that starts with promoting their safety here at work so that they can go home and enjoy time with their families at the end of the day.”

Recognizing National Safety Month at Disney Parks Around the World Dr. Michael Hankins – Chief Physician, Walt Disney World

Dr. Michael Hankins – Chief Physician, Walt Disney World

Dr. Michael Hankins has been with Disney for more than 27 years and serves as the Chief Physician at Walt Disney World Resort. In his role, he provides care for cast members at the Occupational Health Clinic within the park, as well as developing improvements to support the safety of all cast.

Dr. Hankins received his MD from University of Florida and a master’s in public health from Medical College of Wisconsin. From there, he went on to develop a background in Family Medicine with a strong emphasis on preventing illness and injury. In 1995, he worked to computerize our medical operation before most other medical clinics. Today, he is proud to provide cast members with the same level of medical care that he would expect his family to receive.

“The major focus throughout my career has been to advocate for and work toward improving the health and wellness of all cast members,” said Dr. Hankins. “Seeing the ongoing efforts within Disney aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of our cast members and preventing workplace injuries makes it easy for me to remain committed to support these efforts.”

Dr. Gabriel Guo – Chief Physician, Shanghai Disney Resort

Dr. Gabriel Guo has been with Disney for five years, currently serving as the Chief Physician of Shanghai Disney Resort, leading the resort’s medical team that consists of doctors, nurses and other healthcare specialists.

Having studied Clinical Medicine at Peking University in Beijing, China, his team provides health services to both cast members and guests at the resort. In response to COVID-19 related questions from cast members, a special “Ask Dr. Guo” segment was established, allowing Dr. Guo to answer a variety of health-related topics raised by cast members through a question and answer series.

“I believe that what my team and I do makes a difference, since we have the expertise to try to help those who aren’t feeling well,” said Dr. Guo. “We can help our guests and cast members have a healthy and happy experience at our park.”

Recognizing National Safety Month at Disney Parks Around the World Joseph Yip – Director of Security, Safety, Fire and Health Services, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort

Joseph Yip – Director of Security, Safety, Fire and Health Services, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort

Joseph Yip has been with Hong Kong Disneyland Resort for 15 years, currently serving as the Director of Security, Safety, Fire and Health Services. In his role, he is responsible for developing and coordinating Disney’s safety and health efforts at the resort for cast members and guests.

Having studied management science at University of Wales, UK, Joseph brings decades of experience to his role at the resort. He was an advocate for the creation of the Safety & Wellness Council and Committee, aimed to help leaders focus on guest safety methods, safety and wellness policies, and programs for cast members. Since 2006, HKDL has received more than 350 safety and wellness awards from different organizations.

“Family, happiness and good memories are the three key drivers that keep me always looking for opportunities to enhance the safety and wellness for our guests, cast members and loved ones,” said Joseph. “Safety is not just a core value of our business – but also an important part of our lives.”

Recognizing National Safety Month at Disney Parks Around the World Dr. Nicolas Duport – Medical Doctor, Disneyland Paris

Dr. Nicolas Duport – Medical Doctor, Disneyland Paris

Dr. Nicolas Duport joined the Disneyland Paris team earlier this year, currently serving as a Medical Doctor for the resort. In his role, he is responsible for proposing preventative health measures that aim to benefit the health and wellness of the resort’s cast members. Alongside his colleague, Dr. Cyril Warmberg, they coordinate closely with health, safety and security teams to ensure safety remains the top priority at the resort.

Dr. Duport received his master’s in epidemiology and public health at the University of Nancy I, followed by his doctorate in medicine at the University of Paris VII. He also received his diploma of specialized studies in public health and social medicine in 2003. He previously worked for Santé Publique France, the French equivalent of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as a scientific project manager for nearly 15 years. He also received his qualification in occupational medicine at the University of Reims earlier this year before starting his role with the Disneyland Paris team.

“There are many things unique to Disneyland Paris that I find really exciting, including a diversity of professions, a complete medical team of eight doctors working together within and to support a commercial business – which is very rare in France – and the chance to use all of my specialties in one place,” Dr. Duport said.

These professionals, along with their colleagues and teams will continue to work with their local industry partners, as well as health and government authorities to promote the health and safety of guests and cast members.

We’re looking forward to welcoming all of you back to our Disney parks, resorts and stores. Until we are together once again, we wish you and your families’ health, hope, and happiness!

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

The Epcot Transformation has been underway for a while now.

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

PLAY! Pavilion Concept Art ©Disney

Honestly, we’re not sure what to look forward to the most. Is it perhaps the upcoming nighttime spectacular, Harmonious? Or maybe it’s World Celebration and Dreamers Point? Well, we certainly can’t discount the innovative and mysterious Play Pavilion. And it IS mysterious — but we might have just figured out even MORE of what will be inside!

What We Know So Far

First up, let’s chat about the information that Disney has already provided to us on the new Play Pavilion. Construction is currently underway on set design and structural elements in Epcot’s former Wonders of Life pavilion. The area is currently surrounded by construction walls for the neighboring Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

Guardians of the Galaxy and Future Play Pavilion Construction

According to Zach Riddley, portfolio executive for Walt Disney Imagineering, “This innovative, new pavilion is beyond anything we’ve ever created and is completely unique to Epcot.” Hmm…that’s a pretty lofty statement! What could possibly go beyond anything Disney has created? We’ll get into that later EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think ?.

Ridley goes on to say, “Built on the power of play, it introduces an immersive and interactive ‘city’ where you can explore, create, and interact with some of your favorite Disney characters. This is an experience worthy of our bold vision for Epcot – and another signature element of our transformation.”

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

Epcot Experience

So, the pavilion is supposed to be themed as a sort of digital metropolis that’s full of Disney characters, hands-on activities, and engaging entertainment. We know that some of these activities will include an Edna Mode experience where you will rid the world of uninspired style and the Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webby experience where you’ll join a water balloon fight with the little ducks.

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

Edna Mode

As of now, the Play Pavilion is set to be completed by Disney World’s 50th Anniversary in 2021 — although it’s still unclear if 2020’s historic park closures have had any effect on that timeline.

Breaking Down the Concept Art

Let’s talk a little bit about the concept art for the interior of the Play Pavilion; there’s a lot to unpack here. The depicted metropolis has several different components with facades showing Edna Mode (presumably for the Edna Mode experience), a “Dance” building, a cinema, Wedway (if that sounds familiar is because it’s part of the official original name of the PeopleMover! What!?!), and a “Hotel” building.

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

PLAY! Pavilion Concept Art ©Disney

Some aspects of the art appear to be some sort of transparent projection or holograms — particularly the Wedway sign. These could potentially use Disney’s updated Pepper’s Ghost method like they used with Rey in the preshow of Rise of the Resistance in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. In front of the “Let’s Play!” building in the center, it appears that some sort of live performance could be going on.

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

Rise of the Resistance

A particularly interesting aspect of the art is that there are Disney characters wandering around. You can see a child holding hands with Mickey, Tinker Bell flying, Olaf hanging with guests, and more. Typically, Disney does not include characters in concept art unless they will actually be represented. If they don’t use a shocking amount of free-roaming characters, how could this be accomplished? Well, we have an idea.

Disney’s Virtual and Augmented Reality Innovations

Much of the Play Pavilion remains a mystery. On the other hand, we’ve noticed an interesting trend recently that gives us an idea of what we might be seeing when the Play Pavilion opens. Disney has been putting in WORK on the tech side of things when it comes to augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

VR Experience

Disney already has a solid relationship with VR. Imagineers and Walt Disney Studios have developed ways to use VR in the engineering and filmmaking processes. Disney has released some limited consumer VR products, and there’s a third-party VR experience in Disney World already — The VOID in Disney Springs. The VOID is a popular entertainment option, so why not apply that tech in the parks?

We’ve been noticing more and more patent applications and approvals crop up from Disney with inventions in virtual reality. At first, we thought they could be for a consumer application such as virtual reality games or something like the already-released Star Wars: Jedi Challenges — but then, things started to get interesting.

©Disney

Many of the patents have inventions that imply virtual reality would work together with tech in the external environment. These inventions wouldn’t be functional in a consumer’s home but COULD be functional in an external theme park environment. Let’s take a look at the patents we’ve seen that could have something to do with this theory.

Want to learn more about Disney patents? Click here!

VR/AR and the External Space

The first patent we spotted that had to do with the external space was for a system that linked an AR experience with external stereo screens to give the AR user more depth. Augmented reality is a system that augments certain aspects of a user’s view instead of all of it like in Virtual Reality. The most famous example of this is the portable game Pokemon Go, but Disney has used AR before too. An animated figure appears through a screen into a real-world environment.

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

©Disney

Disney has also recently filed patents for flooring that could work alongside an AR or VR system. One of the inventions allowed for dynamic VR ground effects and another allows for a floor system that could potentially stabilize those walking in VR. Flooring is a major point of innovation for the VR industry with the most immersive systems including omnidirectional treadmills.

But perhaps the most telling invention that Disney created is with a robot that syncs with an AR or VR system to provide a tactile experience. For example, in AR, Huey hands you a water balloon. At the exact same time through synced tech, a robot Huey hands you a tactile water balloon dupe. We know, we know. It sounds crazy and futuristic, but this is the tech that Disney has come up with.

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

©Disney

The patent even mentions an application of throwing a ball or similar object — like a water balloon. We’re just sayin’! Interestingly enough, this tech is also what may be used for the lightsaber experience in the Disney parks. But that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be used in the Play Pavilion, too!

Click here to learn more about how a robot can work alongside VR!

VR/AR Optimization

There are several other VR patents we’ve seen that focus on optimizing a system. We won’t run you through all of them, but we do want to talk about a few of the more interesting and exciting ones! Disney has recently developed a few innovations that help to make VR more realistic and immersive. One invention outlines a system for tracking objects in a VR Gaming experience so that the system can be aware of objects in use — sort of like motion tracking on an Xbox Kinect.

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

©Disney

They’ve also worked on gaze-based audio to help make sure sound is coming from the right place and adapting an experience for user height so that various users can have a similar experience (like, say, parents and small children of varying heights). They’ve even come up with a way to create shared VR and AR experiences between multiple users!

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

©Disney

Of course, none of this VR tech is useful unless Disney has a VR headset that they’re comfortable putting on guests. They could easily use a third-party headset, which we thought was the plan for a while. That is until we found a patent for (you guessed it) a VR Head-Mounted Display! So, as you can see, Disney has been heavily investing in VR tech outputs — and it seems to be paying off.

Click here to see Disney’s previous use of AR!

Could the Play Pavilion be an AR/VR-centric space?

Keeping in mind what we know about the Play Pavilion and Disney’s recent AR and VR enhancements, we’re wondering if the experiences in the Play Pavilion could be AR/VR-centric. Again, it’s hard to believe that such a futuristic system could exist but the technology IS available.

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

Wonders of Life becoming Play! Pavilion

Many VR headsets are unwieldy and wired in — not functional for guest wear. However, there are more lightweight options such as Microsoft’s goggles-style display and AR applications don’t need to be nearly as bulky. So it’s not unrealistic that guests could wear a virtual reality headset in the parks.

Based on the new tech, we’re wondering if the Play Pavilion could be a mix of physical effects and AR/VR to provide a totally unique experience and fully immerse guests in the world and story of the Pavilion. This could help with realistic character interactions, immersive games, and more. That sounds like it could be the answer to the “completely unique” experience that Ridley suggests, doesn’t it?

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

Epcot Map with Play Pavilion

This is even more practical since the Epcot pavilion provides an enclosed space. You can’t use VR in a large-scale space outdoors, but an enclosed pavilion or rooms in the pavilion would allow Disney to control guest experience and the technology in an isolated area. The building can be developed to optimally support these AR/VR experiences.

EPCOT’s Play Pavilion Could Be MUCH More Than We Think

Epcot Experience

Of course, this is all theory based on real patents — but WOULDN’T IT BE COOL?! We can’t wait for the reveal of the Play Pavilion next year, or even just for more details to be shared! As always you can keep up with DFB for the latest tech updates and news about Epcot’s Transformation!

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

Since theme parks have started to reopen, one of their highest priorities has been implementing stricter health and sanitation procedures.

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

Disney Springs Sign

Although Disney World and Disneyland haven’t welcomed guests back just yet (but will soon!!), Disney has still started to implement some of its heath and safety procedures in Disney Springs. On top of the temperature checks, social distancing measures, and face mask requirements, restrooms (yes, restrooms) have even switched things up, too.

However, during our time at Universal Orlando, we noticed that their bathroom regulations were well-thought-out for safety, convenience, and cleanliness for everyone visiting. And, before the Disney Parks reopen, they might need to take a few notes from Universal on how restroom facilities should operate.

Universal Orlando Safety Measures

Universal has REALLY been on top of their game with everything we have seen in the parks. Although there have been some bumps in the road (remember the Mobile Order chaos during the opening week?), Universal Orlando has done whatever it can to iron out the kinks and continue to provide the best experiences for guests.

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

Hogsmeade

From what we’ve seen, Universal’s temperature checks have been running smoothly. Hotel guests are given wristbands if they have already been screened to lessen the amount of time spent re-checking everyone. The sanitation measures are also well thought out with hand-sanitizer stations everywhere, attractions being wiped down after use, and more.

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

Temp Checks at Universal

We’ve also noted the attention to distancing with characters placed on stage or behind roped off areas, dots to stand on to watch shows, and distancing signs and stickers throughout the parks to keep everyone six feet apart at all times.

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

How Ya Doin’, Homer??

Universal Orlando Restrooms

But, while there have been consistent signs to remind everyone of the health and safety procedures in the parks, the bathrooms have also been managed extremely well. There are signs outside the restrooms pointing to the nearest available stops and signs inside the restrooms to reassure guests that facilities would be cleaned frequently. We also spotted a number of signs instructing guests to use every other sink to maintain distancing.

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

Restroom Signs at Universal

Universal even shuts restrooms down for a short period of time to do another round of heavy cleaning, just to make sure things are cleaned to their standards. Within the restrooms and stalls, there is still a lot of social distancing and space implemented so guests don’t have to feel worried about an overcrowded area during afternoon rushes to the restrooms.

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

Restrooms

The amount of time spent on something as simple as a restroom shows that Universal has been putting a LOT of thought and effort into their sanitation and custodial measures in the parks.

Disney Springs Safety Measures

Disney has also placed strict health and safety measures all around Disney Springs to make sure that Cast Members and guests are protected. On top of the temperature checks and hand-sanitizing stations, there are also new procedures in restaurants and stores (they’ve implemented Virtual Queues and QR menus to promote distancing and contactless protocols).

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

World of Disney Queue

Disney has continued to find ways to clean high-touch spaces and maintain cleanliness throughout different locations, all while allowing guests to still have great experiences during their time in the shopping and dining district.

Disney Springs Restrooms

However, opposed to the rest of Disney Springs, the restroom situation seems to pale in comparison to Universal’s methods. Disney Springs has SO many signs and markers around the area to clearly designate to guests what each sign means and what to do.

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

Pin Traders

But, the restrooms haven’t seen much change from what they were previously like before. While there are distancing markers outside most restrooms, there are no signs pointing out the restroom areas like Universal and no signs in the restrooms with detailed guidelines either.

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

Restrooms

The same towels dispensers with the pull-down towels and little turning knobs are still present as they had been previously (which is pretty high-touch, if you think about it). Air-blowing hand dryers are still available too, though it’s widely regarded that these sorts of driers actually spread more germs than they prevent. Keep in mind that this doesn’t mean Disney is cleaning any less! We’ve seen custodial teams in restrooms constantly to keep things sanitary.

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

Restroom

The lack of signage in Disney Springs restrooms is very contrary to the extensive information we usually see around the shopping and dining district, let alone at other parks.

Although there have been other interesting ideas that Disney could take from Universal’s reopening, the amount of signs and instructions for restrooms is especially something that Disney World should think of implementing. The additional signage likely does make guests feel reassured about the sanitation procedures around the parks.

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

Cast Member with required face mask

Disney tends to go above and beyond to help guests and keep them informed, and this would be another way to do so. Since there are so many changes happening in the parks, this extra bit of information and guidance would continue to help guests feel safe, like it seems to have done so far in Universal Orlando.

We Hope Disney Does THIS In Their Restrooms When The Parks Reopen

Disney Springs Restrooms

Of course, Disney could have this already installed in its parks (and we won’t know until they re-open in July). While updated signage in restrooms hasn’t been installed in Disney Springs just yet, it might be another update Disney should look into in the future!

What has your experience been like in re-open theme parks? Let us know in the comments below!
