NEWS: AMC to Potentially Reopen Its Movie Theaters Nationwide By July

There’s been a lot of speculation about whether or not AMC could survive the summer since they shut down all of their movie theaters in the U.S. as well as the U.K. due to the current global health crisis.

AMC Theater in Disney Springs Before Its Closure

And while the company had previously announced they would keep their theaters closed until studios began releasing new movies, they are currently working on a plan to reopen as many AMC theaters by July as they can.

CNN reporter @frankpallotta first broke the news via Twitter after AMC’s first-quarter earnings report.

AMC just reported its Q1 earnings.

AMC says it’s “looking forward to welcoming guests to its theatres as soon as it is safe and wise to do so, as well as
being permissible under local, state /provincial and federal guidelines.”

Some films have had their premieres pushed back, but are quickly approaching. Disney’s Mulan is still slated for a July 24th theatrical release, after being postponed in March. AMC hasn’t shared exactly when they’re hoping to reopen by, but we would expect them to try to be open for the premiere of Mulan.

AMC adds that it is “currently planning to reopen almost all of our U.S. and U.K. theatres in July. Doesn’t give a date.

This is so it can showcase WB’s Tenet, which is slated for July 17, followed by Disney’s Mulan, which is slated for July 24.

Meanwhile, AMC says “no movies made by Universal Studios are currently on our docket” they are “in active dialogue with Universal.”

AMC adds that it is “in active dialogue with Universal,” but that “no movies made by Universal Studios are currently on our docket.”

AMC will implement several health and safety measures as part of their plan to reopen, including lowering guest capacity, spacing out parties, and enhancing their cleaning procedures — similar to what we saw them doing before closing down. We’ll continue to follow this story as it develops.

Give Kids the World Village Remains Closed Indefinitely

give kids the world

Give Kids The World, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fulfilling the wishes of children with critical illnesses, announced that they will remain closed indefinitely due to COVID-19.

Their website has an update from the president and CEO:

“Dear Village Family,

It is with a heavy heart that I must share some devastating news both for me personally and for our entire Village family.

Unforeseen circumstances directly related to COVID-19 have resulted in Give Kids The World having to remain closed. The Make-A-Wish Foundation, our majority wish-granting partner, unexpectedly notified us that due to COVID-19, it would not be scheduling any wishes that involve travel or large groups, until a vaccine is in wide use. In addition, although the theme parks are reopening, we are uncertain as to when they will be able to welcome vulnerable guests, including our wish children.

The Village, therefore, will remain closed for an undetermined period of time. Unfortunately, this means we must lay off the majority of our staff effective Saturday, June 27, 2020. A small team will remain to ensure the safety and security of the Village and to nurture our relationships with you – our alumni families, volunteers, wish granting organizations, donors and other partners as well as prepare for our eventual reemergence. We will continue to honor our commitment to never turn a wish child away. If there is a rush wish prior to our reopening, we will work with our wish granting partners to fulfill that wish.

I can promise you that I will work tirelessly to find a way to reopen our beloved Village as soon as possible.

With love,
Pamela Landwirth
Give Kids The World Village CEO & President”

Petition For Disney To Stop Casting POC Meet and Greet Characters with White Entertainers Goes Viral

Petition For Disney To Stop Casting POC Meet and Greet Characters with White Entertainers Goes Viral. Some Disney Parks fans are not happy with how Disney has been “whitewashing” many of the meet and greet characters found in the theme parks around the world. So much so, that it has sparked a petition online to only cast POC entertainers in roles such as Black Panther, Jasmine and Aladdin, Moana, and more.

The creator of the petition writes: “Disney claims to care about people of color, but they continue to cast white men and women in fake spray tans for these particular roles. Important characters such as; Jasmine, Pocahontas, Moana, Black Panther, Li Shang, and Aladdin, within the Disney entertainment arenas around the world, need to be played by the people of color they were brought to life by. It’s extremely disrespectful to the community of color and it needs to stop. Young kids come to the parks looking forward to meeting these characters, aka their personal heroes, and are instead, sadly greeted by white men and women in cheap spray tans. Disney has more than enough monetary resources and beautiful actors to choose from, there is absolutely no reason as to why this should be allowed to continue. So please sign this petition in hopes of making these much needed changes a reality. ”

Currently the petition has 19,658 signatures out of the requested 25,000, with a high chance that many more will be added to the roster by the time you read through this article.

We know entertainment is a tough business to be in, but this never should have been an issue in the first place. There are thousands of entertainers that audition year after year for these roles and though many entertainers in the parks fill multiple face characters roles per their job description, roadblocks should be kept in place to allow for diversity amongst the Entertainment Cast Members, particularly in roles for a POC characters from the films and shows. There is no reason to replace characters with various ethnic backgrounds out of convenience with entertainers that do not share that same heritage.

Have you had this issue when visiting the Disney Parks? Does it ruin the magic for you and your family when a character is blatantly not represented by the proper actor/actress? Then you can sign the petition and support the cause by CLICKING HERE to let your voice be heard.
