Testing Out Face Coverings for Your Vacation (Part 2)

In part 1 of this blog post series, I described the masks to be included in our in-park mask testing.

This blog post is intended to be fun, and not medical advice. No masks in this test are not intended to replace Surgical Masks or N95 Respirators.

Confession time, I have been watching my share of YouTube videos. I have been enjoying seeing Brian in parks, but I also have been hooked on watching Adam Savage from MythBusters fame.

With some encouragement from my family and TouringPlans staff, I decided to do some MythBusters-style mask testing before the parks open.

As a reminder, here’s the CDC face-covering guidelines for being out in public:

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people wear cloth face coverings in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
  • Cloth face coverings may help prevent people who have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others.
  • Cloth face coverings are most likely to reduce the spread of COVID-19 when they are widely used by people in public settings.
  • Cloth face coverings should NOT be worn by children under the age of 2 or anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

The main purpose of wearing a mask is to limit people from infecting others. There might be some benefit for mask wearers to minimize exposure.

Brian suggested doing a test to see what distance a candle can be blown out. Since Brian is 500 miles away, I had to find a different test subject. A styrofoam head, a hairdryer, and a few holes will have to be my Brian. Meet Brian.

With no mask, Brian can blow out a candle 14 inches away with the hairdryer set on low. All masks prevented Brian from blowing out a candle even with the hairdryer on high.

The scarf/gaiter style masks the candle did flicker when the flame is held directly in front of the masks

The second test required simulating droplets in the air, and to see how efficient each mask was at blocking those droplets. I used flour as a stand-in for droplets. Flour is about 1 µm. Viruses are 0.5 µm and below. If flour can get through the mask, so can COVID-19.

For this test, we need a subject to try to inhale flour. Since my kids would not let me throw flour in their faces, I have a second styrofoam head with a vacuum to simulate inhaling. I’ll call the head Derek. Hi, Derek!

With Brian blowing and Derek sucking, I sift flour between the two. At the end of the vacuum (and inside the mask), I added a black filter to catch any flour that Derek inhales.

As all the masks were selected for comfort, not medial use, flour did get through each mask. The force of suction is likely higher than a human mouth, and the filtration is being focused on the intake of the vacuum. Most of the flour did not go through the masks. The filter images are sufficient for comparing masks but is not scientifically conclusive.

We’ll be testing out the masks in the parks when the parks reopen to see which of the masks wins for overall comfort.

Disney Postpones Theatrical Release of ‘Mulan’ for a Second Time Over Coronavirus Concerns

Disney Postpones Theatrical Release of ‘Mulan’ for a Second Time Over Coronavirus Concerns

Disney Postpones Theatrical Release of ‘Mulan‘ for a Second Time Over Coronavirus Concerns. After already being postponed 4 months from its original release date of March 27th to July 24th, Disney is officially moving the release date for the film a second time.

“Making this films has been one of the most satisfying and exhilarating experiences of my entire career, and I’ve been so fortunate to be on this journey with some of the best cast and crew in the business,” director Niki Caro shared via Instagram following the initial release date change from March to July. “We are so excited to share this film with the world, but given the current ever-shifting circumstances we all are experiencing, unfortunately, we have to postpone the worldwide release of Mulan for now. Our hearts are with everyone the world over who is affected by this virus, and we hope that Mulan’s fighting spirit will continues to inspire those who are working so hard to keep us all safe,” Caro added.

The latest Disney live-action remake will now premiere in theaters on August 21st, instead of July 24th as previously planned. The primary reason, according to the Wall Street Journal, is the lack of attendance as theaters are beginning to re-open. Any film company would be hesitant to release a new film when audiences are at minimal capacity in theaters, so this doesn’t really come as a shock to those in the industry, but on the other side of the coin, a highly anticipated film could be just what audiences need to draw them back in to the theaters.

Most theaters, such as AMC Theatres, Cinemark, and Regal Cinemas, that have begun to re-open their doors have put new safety and cleanliness procedures in place to help moviegoers feel more at ease returning to public places,  but that hasn’t stirred much confidence among potential audience members as confirmed COVID-19 cases begin to spike in many states that were the first to re-open. Most theaters that have resumed operation are not even featuring relatively new titles yet, and have begun showing iconic films such as Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, E.T., the original Star Wars trilogy, Lord of the Rings, and Jaws to help draw in crowds.

New Interstate Quarantine Guidelines May Impact Your Disney World Visit

Effective at 11:59 this evening, Thursday, June 24, 2020, travelers to the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut tri-state area, will be required to quarantine for 14 days if they have visited a state with a high incidence of COVID-19 cases.

So, you’re asking, how does this impact my Disney World trip? Well, if you don’t live in the tri-state area and you don’t have an upcoming visit to that area in the works, the new rule (announced by NY Governor Cuomo this afternoon) does not affect your Disney World visit. Move along, nothing to see here at this time.

However, if you are, like me, one of the millions of NY/NJ/CT residents who visit each year, this could be a problem.

The quarantine order will apply to people who have visited states which have a 10% COVID-19 positive test rate on a seven-day rolling average. According to Gov. Cuomo, as of today, that includes nine states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington, Utah, Texas, and Florida.

COVIDactnow.org map, July 24, 2020

So, if you live in NY/NJ/CT and you visit Florida, you’ll be required to quarantine at home for 14 days upon your return. For some folks, this will make little difference in their lives, but if, for example, you have a Disney trip planned toward the end of the summer and you want to head back to work or have your kids head back to school in the early fall, the two weeks stuck back at home could have a real negative impact on your life. A Disney vacation may not make sense if you have to restrict your movement when you get back home.

It’s worth noting that Florida has had a similar quarantine restriction for visitors from New York. Throughout the spring, New Yorkers traveling to Florida were asked to isolate for two weeks before going out. While there is still some confusion about the issue, we believe that the Florida rule for New Yorkers is set to expire on July 7. This means that it’s theoretically possible that you could go from New York to WDW today (as some of the WDW resorts are now open), have to quarantine at your hotel for two weeks, and then return back to NY and have to quarantine there for an additional two weeks. Sigh.

According to USA Today, if someone is caught in NY violating a quarantine rule, they could be subject to a $2,000 fine for the first offense.

As with everything else in the brave new world of Coronavirus, this is all a moving target. There is no specific date for the quarantine rule to end and the rules are subject to change.

If you live in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut, does this change your thinking about a Disney trip? Do you have a trip booked this summer? Will you still go? Let us know in the comments.

BREAKING NEWS: Face Masks Will Be Mandatory in Orange County, Florida, Starting This Weekend!

The state of Florida has slowly but surely been reopening for a few weeks now.

BREAKING NEWS: Face Masks Will Be Mandatory in Orange County, Florida, Starting This Weekend!

Rainbow Mickey Face Mask

With Disney World set to reopen select hotels in just a few days, we’re keeping a close eye on government mandates for the area.

In response to an increase of coronavirus cases across the state, Florida Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings announced that face masks will be mandatory in public spaces starting this weekend. He has issued and signed an executive order that mandates the wearing of face masks in any public space. The order is effective beginning Saturday, June 20th, at 12:01AM.

The mask mandate applies to everyone in a public space who is “working, living, visiting, or doing business in Orange County.” Masks must be consistent with CDC guidelines.

When asked about enforcement of the rule for those eating or drinking in public spaces, Demings confirmed that masks will be expected most of the time. He did note that people cannot wear masks while actively eating and drinking but at all other times, they should be wearing them. There is also an exception for those exercising outdoors, per Demings.

CDC guidelines state that those 2 years old and under and those with preexisting health conditions should not wear masks. Mayor Demings is asking for voluntary compliance with the mandate. As of now, the Executive Order will be in place indefinitely.

Disney Springs Testing New Security Scanners

You know, given the fact that I report the news stories here, it’s not often when I’m down in Walt Disney World and get surprised by something that Disney does. However, this weekend, when I was visiting Disney Springs, imagine my surprise when after parking in the Lime Garage and after getting my temperature checked, I got funneled into walking through a brand new security scanner before entering the shopping and dining district.

My first surprise moment was the fact that they were, in fact, scanning Guests, because that’s not something that typically happens at Disney Springs. My second surprise was when I was asked to step off to the side, where I was asked to dump out the contents of my bag so that they could see into the bottom. A security Cast Member then looked inside and then felt the remaining contents of my bag to make sure there were no weapons inside. Finally, I was wanded front and back with a security wand to make sure that I wasn’t concealing anything on my person. After that, I was free to go into Disney Springs.

The other people in my party were not carrying bags and were not asked to stop for security. I was caught off guard, so I didn’t see if some people with bags were walking through, but I suspect they were because I believe I remembered seeing that there was only a couple of tables for Guests to have their bags checked.

After doing some research, I found out that the new security system that was being tested was from Evolv Technology and I believe that I walked through the Evolv Express. Here is how that particular system works:

According to the company:

Evolv Express is the first no-stop weapons-screening system built to automatically screen groups of people as they walk through without slowing or stopping. Express screens visitors individually or together, while automatically differentiating weapons from personal items. It is the fastest weapons-screening system on the market, consistently screening 60 people every minute for firearms and other threats. That’s 3,600 people per hour – 10X faster than a traditional checkpoint system.

Should Disney decide to employ this new screening system, I believe this would be a game changer. There are multiple reasons why I believe employing this new screening system is a good idea.

Of course, the main reason I believe this is being tested is because of this new COVID world we live in. (Though, I don’t know why they wouldn’t have put this technology in place when the new entryways into the parks were introduced in the first place, but I digress.)

With this new system, it means that Guests don’t have to be backed up in those HUGE lines to wait at bag check. They simply walk right through without stopping. We’ve all been in that incredibly long bag check line before, so we know how hard it would be to social distance those lines.

Next, it means that unless there is something in your bag or on your person that really needs to be checked out, you won’t have to have your bag checked by another person. Again, very helpful when you don’t want to be in a situation where a security Cast Member checks the bag of the person in front of you, then has to put on new gloves, then check your bag, then stop and put on new gloves, then check the bag of the person behind you. If the lines were awfully backed up before, imagine how terrible they would be with that new process due to enhanced safety measures that would need to be put in place due to coronavirus.

Finally, right now, with the way security is in the park, once you have your bag checked, you also, more than likely, will still need to go through the metal detectors. At least that’s how it’s been in my experience. With Evolv Express, everything seemed to be done with ease.

While I’m sure that this new technology is being tested for the parks, I also hope that it will continue to be used at Disney Springs. I’ve always felt a little uneasy knowing that Disney wasn’t checking Guests here, even though they did have Security officers placed all around the shopping and dining district.

Overall, I found that the use of this new way of screening Guests was easy and efficient and should this be the way Disney goes, it will make getting into the parks that much quicker, which I think we all would agree would be welcome.
