What Groceries and More Are Available at Your Disney Resort Merchandise Store?

When you’re staying at a Walt Disney World hotel it’s nice to have a few staples and groceries to help save money, and have fuel at your fingertips in your room. If you’re in a Disney Vacation Club Deluxe Villa, you may want to make use of that full kitchen or kitchenette. It is one of the perks of those villas, after all. During a recent visit to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge I was impressed by the selection, and thought it would help to show some of the groceries, sundries, drinks, beer, and wine you can expect to find at most Disney resort merchandise shops.

Although I am using Disney’s Wilderness Lodge as the example, other Disney resorts at the moderate and value level still have a selection of similar items. Certainly the Deluxe resorts, and specifically those that have Disney Vacation Club villas, have the widest variety and selection. Here’s what you can typically expect.

  • Snacks like chips, pretzels, crackers, and cookies
  • Dry groceries like bread, bagels, muffins, and cereal
  • Coffee, coffee filters, cream, sugar, sweetener, and select condiments
  • Cold groceries like eggs, milk, cheese, and lunch meat
  • Frozen groceries like pizza and frozen dinners
  • Select over-the-counter medicine, first aid items, and sundries
  • Soft drinks, water, and juice
  • Beer and wine

Most of the groceries are priced about 5% – 10% higher than the average grocery store in Central Florida. But, if you’re traveling from an area with higher grocery store prices, perhaps Disney’s prices won’t seem so bad. Philadelphia Cream Cheese is $4.29, a Lunchable is $4.49, and a half gallon of milk is $3.89. Novelty ice creams are also sold, such as the Mickey Premium Bar, and reflect the same prices as in the park.

Where prices get really inflated is with beer, wine, and certain sundries like sunscreen, toothpaste, and medication. A six pack of Miller Light or Bud Light is $16.50. At a local Central Florida Wal-Mart that same six pack is $8.50. A bottle of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay is $22.00 at the merchandise shop at Wilderness Lodge. At the local Wal-Mart? It’s $11.98.

The massive increase in the price of alcoholic drinks really is not surprising. Disney charges a premium for alcoholic drinks at its lounges and restaurants too. One neat thing I’ve noticed at some of the resort merchandise shops is there are usually a few beers and wines that fit the theme of the resort. At Wilderness Lodge I spotted a Frontier Red wine, as well as Firefly Moonshine. And to fit the magical theme, there was Once Upon a Vine wine too.

If you’re looking to save money and considering having groceries delivered, you can do so at your Disney resort. However, there is a $6.00 handling fee from Disney, in addition to any fees charged by whatever grocer you choose, as well as tip.

Do you usually stock up on groceries when staying at Walt Disney World? Have you ever used Disney’s merchandise shops to pick up a few items?

Top Disney Plush Toys of 2020

Every year, the Disney merchandise team creates a large number of plush toys for the parks. I’m sure it is a challenge to come up with new ideas of things to encourage repeat customers to buy again and again. How many Perry the Platypus plush does one person need anyhow. (The answer is three visible from where I’m sitting, apparently.)

This year, we saw some cute new additions to Disney’s plush lineup. Here’s our top picks.

Sleeping Figment plush

Top Disney Plush Toys of 2020

In the category of plush I don’t need any more of, Figment rates very high. But this adorable sleeping Figment plush just about did in my resolve. Perfect size to cuddle up with as a small pillow, it brought out all the awwws from our team when we spotted it at EPCOT.

So. . . Many. . . Wishables

Top Disney Plush Toys of 2020

One down side to Wishables is that they don’t have any way to attach them to a bag or purse. Or is that a good thing, because otherwise I’d be carrying around my weight in Wishables plush. These tiny plush come in series, with one open-edition and others in blind bags. Ride-specific. Festival-specific. Food-specific. There wasn’t a collection that someone on the team wasn’t eager to get. (Our purchase? Feeling around for a Disney Cruise Line Pluto for our Pluto-loving kid.)

Shoulder Buddies

Top Disney Plush Toys of 2020

Also in the tiny and cute category was an assortment of shoulder buddies. These little plush use magnets to “sit” on your shoulder and are simply adorable. From Pascal to Mushu and Remy to Figment, we didn’t see many people wear these on their shoulders in the parks, but wouldn’t they be a great addition to a cosplay or Halloween costume?

Did you buy any of these or other plush at a Disney park this year? Do you have a favorite plush toy for you kids (or for you as a kid at heart)? Let us know in the comments.

Our Favorite Merchandise Splurges of 2020

Oh, Disney merchandise team! You have such good skills to separate us from our money each year. This year there were some real stand-out items that we couldn’t wait to buy for our own homes. Here’s our top picks from 2020 for merchandise splurges–things we didn’t need, but still bought anyhow.

Space Mountain Cookie Jar

Our Favorite Merchandise Splurges of 2020

Confession time — I’ve never ridden Space Mountain because I don’t do roller coasters. But because this is an iconic part of my husband’s drive home from work (and because I’m as old as Space Mountain), I knew I had to have it for the kitchen. It’s just plain cool, even though I may never use it as a cookie jar. It is part of a larger collection of 45th anniversary Space Mountain merchandise here, which is unusual because I’m pretty sure I’m still 29….

Ink and Paint Collection

Our Favorite Merchandise Splurges of 2020

Every so often, Disney merchandise hits it out of the park — literally. Found all over Walt Disney World property, the Ink and Paint collection may be one of our favorite collections of merchandise yet. There were so many parts of it that brought about oohs and aahs. My daughter got a dress, I got a serving platter and some small ceramic jars for holding fuel rods and cords. There were aprons and pens and serving bowls and art supplies, and color your own backpacks. It just went on and on, and all of it was awesome! Want to see more? Here you go!

Trader Sam’s Mug Artwork Merchandise

Our Favorite Merchandise Splurges of 2020

Fellow blogger Dani is a huge fan of the tiki bar motif, and so of course she’s a major fan of Trader Sam’s. So when a line of Trader Sam’s tiki mug artwork merchandise came out, she knew she had to get something. Her splurge, the Trader Sam’s Mug Throw Pillow, but you can see the rest of the collection here.

Did you have any merchandise that you splurged on at Walt Disney World or through shopDisney this year? Let us know in the comments.

Disney in a Minute: What is a Mickey Bar?

We’re here with a series of quick posts, “Disney in a Minute,” bite-sized nuggets of information that can better help you understand a Disney term or planning topic. Enjoy!

There are Mickey pretzels, Mickey waffles, and Mickey donuts, but arguably the most iconic of all Mickey Mouse-shaped foods is the Mickey bar. The official name of the “Mickey bar” is Mickey’s Premium Ice Cream Bar.

The Mickey bar is a Nestle product sold at carts in the parks and in freezer cases in the Disney resorts – a Mickey Mouse-shaped slab of vanilla ice cream enrobed in a “chocolatey” coating. The vanilla is not as heavy as a super premium ice cream and the coating has enough of a waxy mouthfeel to make you understand why they had to say “chocolatey” and not just chocolate. Still, it’s a refreshing treat on a hot day in the parks.

Disney itself proclaims Mickey bars as “The Happiest Snacks on Earth” and promotes their status as the snack ideal on t-shirts and other park paraphernalia – everything from dog toys to COVID masks. And there are thousands of fan homages to the Mickey bar shape on self-made merchandise sites like Etsy.

The current price for a Mickey bar in the parks is $6.00 (including tax). You can also find boxes of six purported Mickey bars in the freezer sections of supermarkets and big box stores like Target, often for about $7-8 per box of six. Be aware that these are not the exact same item as the Mickey bars sold in the parks. They are smaller and different formulation, but when you’re stuck at home during a pandemic, they’re a worthy (and much less expensive) substitute.
