Universal Orlando Resort 2021 Preview

As we yeet 2020 off a cliff into oblivion it is finally time to look ahead to 2021. In addition to a year of change, firsts, and hopefully many vials of vaccines, 2021 also is bringing many additions and changes to the Universal Orlando Resort. In this article, we will preview the year ahead at Universal Orlando Resort.

Before we get any further, please consider donating to the Cast Member Pantry or other local food banks to help support employees let go in 2020.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster

One of the most anticipated coasters in the world for 2021, the Jurassic World VelociCoaster opens in summer 2021 at Islands of Aventure. This brand-new coaster combines all the elaborate theming and intricate design work from Universal’s recent projects, such as Hagrid, with the design of a modern steel coaster. VelociCoaster features two launches, four inversions, near missing “head-chopper” rockwork, and a 155-foot-tall top hat element.

You will be racing through the raptor paddock in style on slick, 24-seat coaster vehicles. The head-rest mounted spot-lights will illuminate our path while the lap bars will provide unparalleled freedom of movement during the ride’s sustained airtime.

New CityWalk Store

In early 2020 several CityWalk retail establishments closed for a new project. Throughout 2020 the stores were gutted and reconfigured into one large venue. While Universal has not confirmed the replacement, we believe the store will be a new, larger Universal Studios Store with more retail space and themed sections. Expect an official announcement sometime in early 2021 for a 2021 opening.

Mardi Gras 2021

Universal Orlando Resort 2021 Preview

Feet don’t fail me now. Mardi Gras 2020 was cut short due to COVID-19 but expect a return of a modified Mardi Gras in 2021. While we are not expecting any concerts this year, expect an updated Tribute Store, Mardi Gras float walk-through experience, more unique food and beverage options, and of course stilt walkers. Stilt walkers are Universal.

Universal has not announced Mardi Gras 2021 dates yet, but the event is likely to occur from February through April 2021.

Halloween Horror Nights 30

Universal Orlando Resort 2021 Preview

The biggest gut-punch this year was the cancelation of 2020’s Halloween Horror Nights in what would have been the event’s 30th anniversary year. Thankfully Universal provided a small taste of the event in September and October with a daytime Halloween event to satiate us. 2021 will bring us the full anniversary year with 10 houses, multiple shows, scare zones, and more. Universal even went the extra mile and teased us with a house debuting next year, Puppet Theater Captive Audience:

Due to 2020’s cancellation, expect Universal to keep announcements close to the vest for a while. We believe Halloween Horror Nights 2021 will run from the beginning of September through October 31, 2021.

Other Surprises…

Universal always has a few surprises up its sleeves for any given year, from new experiences like meeting dinosaurs, to new restaurants, and even all-new theme parks. We expect lots of additions and updates throughout the year and you can find all that coverage, and more, on the TouringPlans blog!

REVIEW – Brunch at Raglan Road is the Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow

For your consideration, we present Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant’s brunch as one of the best values at Walt Disney World. When you consider that there are few character breakfast options available right now, and charge about $42 per person, and compare that to the live music that is offered at Raglan Road, with regular menu pricing, there is a great value here. Raglan Road is one of the most iconic places at Disney Springs, standing proud in The Landing section.

The brunch menu at Raglan Road is one the most indulgent of any menu at Walt Disney World. The dining experience starts with Stout Brown Bread served with Apple Butter; it’s hard to resist filling up on it. Our team ordered a nice assortment of sweet and savory items.

  • Pork Hash Tagged – Braised Pork Belly, Scallions and Potato Hash, Topped with Two Fried Eggs, $16.00
  • Rack of Heaven – Slow Roasted Guinness Glazed Full Rack of Baby Back Ribs, $28.00
  • Worth the Wait Beef Sandwich – 12 Hour Braised Beef, Sauteed Mushrooms, Crispy Onions, Garlic Aioli, Smoked Cheddar, On Ciabatta, $20.00
  • Pancakes Diaspora – Homemade Pancakes with Creme Fraiche, Maple Syrup and Mixed Berry Compote, $13.00
  • Kids’ Gold’N Chicken Meal – 2 Deep Fried Chicken Goujons (strips); Choice of Side, $9.00

The Pork Hash Tagged was the most brunchy item the team dined on; definitely a winner. The Rack of Heaven Ribs had a delicious Guinness glaze and the mashed potatoes were some of the best the team has ever had on Disney property. The pancakes were delightful and affordable, but there are more impressive items on the menu. The Worth the Wait Beef Sandwich was large enough for two people and had hearty, robust flavors. The kids chicken fingers were good, different than the standard Disney chicken fingers or nuggets; the fries were “the bomb” according to our junior field researcher.

The delicious brunch fare combined with the bread to start, and an Irish beer or two, and our team was ready to snooze in the booth. Thankfully the lively music and entertainment kept them energized. The tables were spaced out compared to the old days. The staff is diligent about reminding guests not to get up without a mask. Spacing markers are present in the lobby and at the exit.

Our readers give Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant a 93% thumbs up and it is ranked number 11 out of 103 similar full service options at Walt Disney World. That puts it at the top tier, and it is not merely the luck of the Irish that earns Raglan Road such high marks. The food is delicious and high quality, and the atmosphere is hard to beat. Brunch is offered on Saturdays and Sundays, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. It’s hard to choose between brunch here and brunch at Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ – both offer some of the best meals on Disney property.

Have you had brunch at Raglan Road before? Where’s your favorite place to brunch at Disney?

REVIEW – Sunshine Seasons Is a Quick Service Dining Option that Shines Bright at EPCOT

EPCOT may be considered the foodies park, and for good reason, but sometimes you may just want something inspired by American cuisine rather than something international. Sunshine Seasons is currently the only quick service dining option inside Future World. The good news is the food is pretty great. The other good news is it offers convenient mobile ordering and an interesting setting.

Our team visited EPCOT this week and I was curious about the state of things at Sunshine Seasons. So with a suggestion from me and a Twitter poll to our followers, our team visited this quick service location. The menu at Sunshine Seasons is one of the largest of any quick service location on Disney property, though it is slightly reduced right now. The focus is primarily on American modern classic fare, but there are a few Latin and Greek influences too.

The Land Crusher Sandwich and Oak-grilled Salmon at Sunshine Seasons

Our Twitter followers selected two entrees for our team to (hopefully) enjoy:

  • Oak-grilled Salmon – Served with Cheese Grits and Andouille Corn Succotash, $12.99
  • The Land Crusher – Pulled Pork and Cheddar piled high on Texas Toast served with Chips, $10.99

Good job Twitter followers! Both entrees were enjoyed by our team. The Land Crusher won out. It is a robust sandwich that could feed two people, but is perfectly acceptable if consumed by one person. It is delicious. You might get a few curious looks when eating this large, messy sandwich, but it is worth it.

Oak-grilled Salmon at Sunshine Seasons

The Oak-grilled Salmon is a great option for those that prefer something healthful, but satisfying. Salmon at Walt Disney World does have a sad tendency to be overcooked, and such was the case with this dish. Still, the cheese grits and Andouille succotash (corn and lima beans, peppers, and Andouille sausage) were two really great sides that helped elevate the plate.

One of the helpful resources on our site and our Lines app is the listings for every Walt Disney World dining option. Thanks to our readers we are able to include ratings and rankings for every restaurant. Our readers giving Sunshine Seasons a 90% thumbs up rating, and rank it at number 27 out of 108 quick service options at Walt Disney World. This makes it one of the highest rated options and a great choice.

Pick-Up Windows at Sunshine Seasons
Sunshine Seasons Dining Area (photo is pre COVID-19)

Mobile ordering is available at this location, which is one of only two quick service locations at EPCOT with it available. Mobile ordering is really convenient especially when you place your order while in line for a ride, and then check-in to pick up you’re order when you’re done with the ride. Sunshine Seasons resembles a modern mall food court, but the dining area is in beneath the atrium of The Land pavilion with views of Living with the Land boat ride and Soarin’ creating an exciting atmosphere. There are four sections of seating, each with tables that resemble one of the four seasons (not the band, the actual seasons).

Have you ever dined at Sunshine Seasons? Where’s your favorite place to dine at EPCOT?

REVIEW! THIS Treat is the Surprising WINNER of All the Fourth of July Treats We’ve Had in Disney World!

We’ve taken with you us all day to the Disney Resorts to find Fourth of July treats all over Disney World!

REVIEW! THIS Treat is the Surprising WINNER of All the Fourth of July Treats We’ve Had in Disney World!

Beach Club

While we’ve stopped by Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, we’re at our last stop of the day at Disney’s Beach Club Resort!

Although this treat might be last of the day, it’s definitely not least. The Red White and Blueberry Trifle is layered with berry compote, vanilla cake, shortbread crumble, cherry mousse, whipped cream, and sprinkles.

REVIEW! THIS Treat is the Surprising WINNER of All the Fourth of July Treats We’ve Had in Disney World!

Red White and Blueberry Trifle

We’re gonna be honest here — looks can be deceiving. We did NOT think much of this trifle when we first saw it and almost walked right past it! Disney is a big fan of verrines (AKA trifles) and we frequently see them appearing in their home base of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While this Beach Club dessert is called a “trifle,” it’s much more similar to a verrine. But, we’re not complaining!

Red White and Blueberry Trifle

The Red White and Blueberry Trifle has a bit of a crunch from the shortbread crumbles, even though the rest of the treat is nice and smooth. Although a lot of the berry, cherry, and whipped cream flavors are sweet, there’s a hint of tartness from some of the lemon juice mixed into the trifle.

Red White and Blueberry Trifle

If you’re craving a more traditional treat, the Beach Club Resort also has a Fourth of July Cupcake and a Welcome Back Funfetti Cupcake too! However, the Welcome Back Cupcake sold out pretty quickly, so we’ll have to check back to give you a look and review.

REVIEW! THIS Treat is the Surprising WINNER of All the Fourth of July Treats We’ve Had in Disney World!

Fourth of July Cupcake

While our hearts will belong to the patriotic Peanut Butter Pie that we had today (we just can’t get enough of it), we were surprised to find that the Red White and Blueberry Trifle happened to be our other favorite Fourth of July treat for only $5! It’s one of the least aggressively-sweet treats we tried. The balance of citrus, berry, and sweet flavors were refreshing compared to the other chocolate or sugary buttercream flavors we’ve had all day long. On that festive note, we wish you a Happy Fourth of July however you spend it!

How are you celebrating the Fourth of July today? Let us know in the comments below!

REVIEW! We Found the MOST Patriotic Treat in Disney World for the Fourth of July!

Disney fireworks (even virtually!) and food seems like the perfect way to spend the Fourth of July today!

REVIEW! We Found the MOST Patriotic Treat in Disney World for the Fourth of July!

Disney’s BoardWalk Inn

We’re snacking our way around the Disney Resorts wearing our stretchy shorts (there are just so many good treats)! Although we’ve already fallen in love with SO many red, white, and blue treats like the patriotic Peanut Butter Pie and Fourth of July Cupcake, we’re back at the BoardWalk Bakery for a whole array of festive treats.

Although we’re all about the red, white, and blue for the Fourth of July, after we ate our way through BoardWalk’s Fourth of July cupcake, we shifted gears to see what ELSE was on the star-spangled menu. First, we dove into the soft Strawberry Shortcake Bar at the BoardWalk Inn (pink is one of our favorite colors too) for $5.99.

REVIEW! We Found the MOST Patriotic Treat in Disney World for the Fourth of July!

Strawberry Shortcake Bar

The bar is layered with fluffy vanilla cake, strawberry filling, and whipped cream. If you’re looking for something light and smooth, the Strawberry Shortcake has simple and sweet flavors that combine together wonderfully. Although it’s tasty, we definitely could have used a stronger strawberry flavor. If you’re looking for a sweet treat that won’t weigh you down, this will fit the bill nicely.

Strawberry Shortcake Bar

But, the real winner for us was the mini American Apple Pie! The crust is similar to the Peanut Butter Pie‘s buttery crust over at the Contempo Cafe with apple filling, crumble, and a sweet drizzle on top. When you order it up, you’ll get a fresh dollop of whipped cream and sprinkles on top.

REVIEW! We Found the MOST Patriotic Treat in Disney World for the Fourth of July!

American Apple Pie

The inside has bits of soft apple with a kick cinnamon flavor that’s perfect for all the apple pie lovers out there! While the American Apple Pie is served cold, we actually think that it would be GREAT to take home and pop in the microwave so it’s warm like a fresh pie out of the oven. Plus, while the whipped cream was nice, we think some vanilla ice cream on top would make it the ultimate festive treat for the Fourth of July!

REVIEW! We Found the MOST Patriotic Treat in Disney World for the Fourth of July!

American Apple Pie

You can get the American Apple Pie for $5.99 (and maybe even learn how to bake your own full-sized version at home)!
