Disney Animal Kingdom Performs Rare Cataract Surgery on White Rhino Kendi

At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the dedicated Animal Care team noticed subtle changes in 27-year-old white rhino Kendi during routine wellness exams. Veterinarians identified early-stage cataracts forming in her right eye, a condition that could lead to blindness if left untreated. The surgical removal of cataracts from such a large mammal is exceptionally rare and required extensive planning and innovation. Dr. Betsy from Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment led the preparation process over several years, training Kendi to accept voluntary eye drops up to four times daily. A collaborative team including an ophthalmologist from the University of Florida designed advanced surgical techniques adapted for one of the world’s largest land mammals. The surgery was successful, followed by creative aftercare solutions like a custom protective eye mask crafted by Disney’s costuming team over two years. This procedure not only restored Kendi’s vision but also contributes to broader species conservation efforts for white rhinos facing threats in the wild. The veterinary community plans to share these surgical techniques globally, while families can learn how caring for individual animals supports wildlife protection worldwide. Today, Kendi enjoys clearer sight and renewed confidence back on the savanna at Animal Kingdom.
