InterDigital has secured a patent injunction against Disney across eleven European nations, including France, Germany, and Italy. The Düsseldorf Local Division of the UPC ruled that Disney infringed on InterDigital’s patents related to high-efficiency video coding techniques used in streaming services. This legal decision also aligns with previous rulings in Germany and Brazil concerning intellectual property violations involving HDR technology. Josh Schmidt, Chief Legal Officer at InterDigital, emphasized that their encoding innovations are essential for premium streaming experiences and justify higher subscription fees. As a result of this ruling, Disney must halt the transmission of encoded picture data and bitstreams that violate these patents within the affected countries. The injunction specifically impacts Disney Plus features in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, and other listed nations. Disney retains the option to appeal this decision through legal channels while compliance is enforced across the region.
