Disney Parks See Unusually Low Crowds During Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend at Walt Disney World was surprisingly quiet, with crowd levels remaining shockingly low even through the holiday. Most schools were still in session, and locals did not show up in any measurable way over the long weekend. The large slate of attractions and entertainment scheduled to open on May 26th kept the crowds away for the rest of late May. Park-by-park data showed mostly crowd level 2s, with Animal Kingdom spiking up a few times due to its limited capacity. Touring Plans predictions were either spot-on or within one crowd level 71% of the time, though they significantly underestimated how few people showed up. Attraction downtime averaged 4.1% across the week, with EPCOT having the highest downtime at 4.6% of its capacity. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad had the worst overall downtime at 15%, continuing a worrying trend with major headliners coming back from refurbishments. Only two attractions in all of Walt Disney World had average posted waits over an hour, with no attraction averaging over an hour in actual wait times. Magic Kingdom had an incredible week with an average posted wait for every attraction of under 20 minutes. Actual wait times in the Lines App averaged 73% of what was posted, with Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover being the worst inflation offender. With new Cool Kid Summer offerings going live, waits are expected to increase at Animal Kingdom due to Bluey and Bingo Virtual Queue. Scattered thunderstorms are now in the forecast for pretty much every day with highs in the 80s and 90s.
