This strict deadline stems from a settlement agreement with California’s Air Resources Board regarding air pollution emissions. The company previously paid a $56,000 fine in 2024 after discovering uncontrolled Honda engines on the ride vehicles were operating without proper emission controls. Officials had earlier confirmed plans to retire the gas engines by early 2027, but the potential closure threat was not previously disclosed to the public. Disney now has time through January to operate the attraction normally while developing prototypes for electric replacement vehicles.
