Disneyland Autopia Faces Electric Car Deadline or Closure Threat

Disneyland’s iconic Autopia attraction and its counterpart at Disney World are undergoing significant changes due to environmental regulations. The gas-powered vehicles have long been a subject of debate, but recent developments have accelerated plans for conversion to electric models. According to reports from the Orange County Register, Disney must complete this transition by February 1st or face closure of the historic ride. This strict deadline stems from a settlement agreement with California’s Air Resources Board regarding air pollution emissions. The company previously paid a $56,000 fine in 2024 after discovering uncontrolled Honda engines on the ride vehicles were operating without proper emission controls. Officials had earlier confirmed plans to retire the gas engines by early 2027, but the potential closure threat was not previously disclosed to the public. Disney now has time through January to operate the attraction normally while developing prototypes for electric replacement vehicles. This development marks another chapter in Disney’s ongoing efforts to modernize its attractions while meeting environmental compliance requirements.
