What We Loved the Most in 2020

Whether it’s a headliner attraction opening or something that just makes life better, or an experience of making lemonade out of lemons, there were some things we loved about 2020. Here’s our list of the things that we actually loved from 2020.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway

What We Loved the Most in 2020
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway – December 9, 2020

If there’s ever a year where we just needed something fun, it was this year. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is just plain fun. It may not be as high-tech as Rise of the Resistance, and certainly won’t be as heart-stopping as Guardians of the Galaxy or TRON when they open, but that’s what makes this so incredible. It’s something the whole family can enjoy and it is fun to do again and again. It also has the perfect 2020 motto “Nothing Can Stop Us Now…” which also wins for best irony in that this attraction launched and then Walt Disney World closed that same month. Ah, 2020.

Character Cavalcades for the Holidays

What We Loved the Most in 2020

With the desire to keep people from congregating for things like parades, and with meet and greets on hold, Disney introduced character cavalcades at all Walt Disney World theme parks. What was really wonderful, however, were the cavalcades for Halloween and Christmas, allowing daytime guests to experience some of the beloved aspects of the nighttime parades during hard-ticket events but without the extra cost of attending the event. Even when the nighttime events come back, I’d personally love to see these little cavalcades continue.

The NBA Bubble

What We Loved the Most in 2020

Disney has been host to all sorts of sports events in the past, but the sheer scope and logistics behind the NBA Bubble were mind-boggling. It was surreal hearing commentators talking about “that shot on basket went so far that it almost hit EPCOT” and seeing glimpses inside Bubble life at Disney resorts. Even if you weren’t a basketball fan, it was a welcome escape over the summer.

New Bag Check Procedure

What We Loved the Most in 2020

Gone are the days of standing behind the person with a backpack that has 50 different zippered pouches that all have to be opened one at a time! The new walk-through security screening at Disney Parks is so much easier and more efficient. For most people, just walk on through security without having your bag checked. (If you have something that sets off the scanner, for instance umbrellas seem to be problematic at times, you go for quick additional screening.) This has made for a much more pleasant experience entering the parks without compromising safety.

Got any items you’d include on this year’s list of things we loved? Let us know in the comments.

We’re only four weeks out until Disney World’s official grand re-opening!

The parks will be opening in phases with Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom slated to re-open first and Epcot and Hollywood Studios following after them. Although we’ve spotted construction on the McDonald’s, Cinderella Castle, and Disney’s Grand Floridian Walkway, there are even MORE new updates coming to Disney World than we even knew about.

Thanks to @bioreconstruct, we were able to see a first look at the new bag check area coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

While the security check has been under construction for a while with green tarps near the parking lots, the bag check area is projected to (hopefully) open along with the rest of Animal Kingdom on July 11th.

There is a new area for the trams when Disney puts more transportation back into use during the parks’ phased re-openings…

…and enough space for numerous guests to be able to go through security for a smooth entrance into Animal Kingdom.

While there is PLENTY of progress on the new bag check, we can’t be fully certain that the construction will be finished in a month. Disney Springs is also testing a new touchless security check method today that could possibly be used when parks re-open in July as well. However, we will continue to keep you updated on all things Disney World and its re-opening!

Will you be going to Animal Kingdom on July 11th? Let us know in the comments below!

Could This Be The Future Of Bag Check in Disney World? Disney Springs Is Testing A NEW Security Screening Method Today!

As Disney Springs has re-opened, we’ve seen a lot of changes from the Disney World that we knew prior to the closures.

While parking, health and safety measures, and temperature screenings have been implemented in the area, Disney is also looking for ways to use more contactless methods throughout the parks.

Although we’ve seen QR code menus and contactless forms of payment recently, Disney World also has some high-touch protocol to consider when the parks re-open, like bag check at the theme parks.

While we were at Disney Springs today, we spotted testing for a new screening method that could help make security checks faster and safer. Since the managers at the Lime Garage in Disney Springs asked us not to take photos (it’s a work in progress, folks!), we have some graphics to share and we’ll explain the gist to you.

The new screening method will allow guests to walk through a touchless scanner that will be able to check their bags before they enter the park. It’s similar to a metal detector or one of the inventory control detectors you can find in numerous retail locations. (You know — the things that go BEEP BEEP BEEP when you walk out of the store if the cashier didn’t take off the little ink alarm tag.)

Even though it’s just going through a testing phase at the moment, these scanners would allow guests to get where they’re going faster by skipping the bag check lines and reducing overall contact.

Now, this could work very well for moving large groups of people through security at the Disney parks, but will it spot banned items other than weapons? Like selfie sticks, glass bottles, and other more specific-to-Disney-World contraband?

Again, Disney has not announced any information about this testing phase, and we stress again that it is ONLY in a testing phase right now. It’s possible that Disney would only use these for conferences or for the resort hotels and not for the parks at all. We will keep you updated on any additional details we find out!

Were you able to experience the new scanner in Disney Springs today? Let us know your experience in the comments below!
