Why Walt Disney World Should End Park Reservations for Annual Passholders

Over recent years, Walt Disney World has eliminated many guest-unfriendly policies, yet park reservations for Annual Passholders remain a significant exception. This article argues that the reservation system has outlived its usefulness and actively detracts from the guest experience and Disney’s financial performance. The current system was initially necessary during the post-pandemic reopening to manage severely limited capacity and handle surge demand from returning visitors. However, with park attendance now down by millions since peak years and substantial surplus capacity available, the system no longer serves a practical purpose. Disney leadership has repeatedly stated a desire to simplify the guest experience and reduce friction, but the reservation requirement contradicts this goal. The author suggests that expanding “good-to-go” days, which allow visits without reservations, should become the default for most of the year. By implementing this change, Disney could improve guest satisfaction, encourage new Annual Pass purchases, and generate positive goodwill. The piece concludes that while blockout dates will continue to manage crowds during peak periods, eliminating unnecessary reservations on most days is a low-cost, high-reward improvement.
