Disney Paves Over Broken World Celebration Gardens Lighting System After Months of Failures

World Celebration Gardens opened in December 2023 as a centerpiece of EPCOT’s redesign, featuring an interactive in-ground lighting system intended to honor the original fiber-optic pavement. However, the new LED installation quickly developed persistent problems including software glitches and physical degradation from Florida sun and heavy foot traffic. The plastic covers warped and cracked, creating safety hazards that forced maintenance teams to rope off large portions of the courtyard. Makeshift repairs involved drilling visible screws through the covers and applying thick caulk, which further degraded the visual appeal. Construction crews recently extracted the illuminated strips entirely and are now pouring solid concrete into the empty channels rather than repairing or upgrading them. This decision indicates Disney is permanently removing the problematic lighting system instead of attempting another repair approach. While this eliminates a key aesthetic element of the new gardens, it resolves a lingering safety hazard and brings long-overdue stability to EPCOT’s main thoroughfare.
