Disney Wins Decade-Long Property Tax Battle in Orange County Court Case

A ten-year legal conflict between Walt Disney World and Orange County has reached its conclusion with a decisive victory for the entertainment giant. The lawsuit, initiated in 2016, contested property assessments for two deluxe resorts including Animal Kingdom Lodge and Wilderness Lodge. Disney successfully argued that the county had improperly included intangible assets in their valuation calculations according to Florida law. A judge ruled in favor of Disney, reducing the assessed values by a combined total of nearly forty-four million dollars. This decision will require Orange County officials to recalculate tax obligations for these properties and may result in refunds for previously overpaid taxes. The ruling has sparked discussions among local labor unions and educators regarding potential impacts on public school funding from large property tax appeals. While Disney receives significant attention, county officials note that numerous other property owners are engaged in similar legal challenges throughout the region.
