Orlando International Airport is advancing plans to introduce flying taxis within the next few years. Testing for this innovative transportation method has officially begun, with the airport collaborating with Florida Department of Transportation under a federal pilot program. Companies like BETA Technologies are currently testing their electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, which can carry four passengers up to 215 nautical miles. The program aims to develop standards for safely integrating these vehicles into the national airspace system. Initial operations will focus on cargo delivery, medical responses, and passenger transport. Florida has also passed legislation allowing funding for vertiport construction across the state. A vertiport is currently being built at a testing facility in Auburndale. Commercial service could potentially launch by the end of this year as testing ramps up this summer.
