McDonalds Tests New AI Drive-Thru System At Five US Locations

McDonald’s is currently testing a new artificial intelligence system designed to handle drive-thru orders at five locations across the United States. This Google-powered technology, known as ArchiQ, greets customers, takes their orders, and calculates totals without requiring human assistance. The system supports both English and Spanish and can recognize returning patrons who request their usual items. According to a franchise owner involved in the trial, the AI successfully processed about 90% of orders without needing human intervention. Proponents argue that this innovation could free up staff to focus on other tasks during busy periods when manual ordering often causes delays. However, critics point out that AI is not infallible and may generate incorrect orders that still require employee attention to resolve. The rollout remains limited to these specific test sites as the company evaluates the technology’s effectiveness before making broader decisions. Public reaction on social media has been largely negative regarding the implementation of such automation in customer service roles. McDonald’s has not yet announced plans for a wider expansion beyond the current testing phase, leaving future availability uncertain.
