Universal Film Tops Disney With Record-Breaking Movie Budget Costs

A recent report from Fortune reveals that Universal Pictures has surpassed Disney and Lucasfilm to produce the most expensive film ever made. Jurassic World: Dominion, released in 2022, cost approximately $658.8 million to produce, edging out Star Wars: The Force Awakens which had a budget of $638.9 million in 2015. The massive production costs were largely driven by pandemic-related challenges including COVID-19 safety protocols and testing requirements that caused significant delays. Universal kept much of the cast and crew housed during production shutdowns, adding millions to the overall project cost. Despite the eye-popping budget, Jurassic World: Dominion still performed well at the box office earning over $1 billion worldwide. The newly revealed figures highlight how expensive blockbuster filmmaking became during the pandemic era as major studios continue pushing production costs to new heights.
