The Transportation Security Administration is installing new computed tomography X-ray machines across nearly 300 airports nationwide. These advanced scanners create detailed three-dimensional images of carry-on luggage, improving the detection of prohibited items while allowing passengers to leave electronics and small liquids inside their bags. However, the technology comes with limitations including a narrower entry tunnel that requires many larger carry-ons to be checked instead. Undeveloped film remains an item that must undergo manual inspection to avoid damage from the scanning radiation. While these upgrades aim to speed up security lines and reduce manual bag inspections, some travelers will face new restrictions on what they can bring onboard.
