Universal’s Jurassic Park ‘Velocicoaster’ Construction Update

Universal’s Jurassic Park ‘Velocicoaster’ Construction Update

We recently attended a Passholder preview at the Universal Orlando Resort for their theme park reopening and got to see major updates on the new rollercoaster being built. The theme parks have been closed since March and only recently has construction been able to resume. This newest attraction is located inside Islands of Adventure and inside the Jurassic Park land and meets up to Hogsmeade.

Universal’s Jurassic Park ‘Velocicoaster’ Construction Update

This new ‘Velocicoaster’ is going to be huge and said to be heavily velociraptor themed. This is from both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchises. The name isn’t official but fans and rumors have dubbed it the ‘Velocicoaster’. There’s even an updated Raptor Encounter with a brand new baby raptor.

This new rollercoaster at Universal Orlando is going to be high thrills. It’s located on the water much like their ‘Hulk’ themed coaster. There is no opening date announced yet but we will be sure to update you as soon as we get more information.

Here’s How Virtual Lines Work at the Reopened Universal Orlando Theme Parks

We’re LIVE from the Passholder preview at Universal Orlando Resort!

Universal Orlando Resort

We’re taking you with us as we tour all the sights and thrills Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. So far things have looked a little different than we remember — with temperature checks, masks, and other safety protocols in place — but now we’re checking out the RIDES!

We stayed at Universal’s Aventura Hotel last night (which you can read more about here!) and got into the parks bright and early this morning!

Aventura Hotel

And all through the night, we have been super curious to see how Universal Studios would be implementing its new virtual queue system. Let’s go check it out!

Read about the changes Universal Studios has implemented at its resort hotels here!

How Universal Studio’s New Virtual Line Experience Works

Before you head off to the parks, Universal Studios advises guests to download their free app — this is how you’ll reserve your spot in their new “Virtual Line Experience.” The app can be used anywhere inside Universal Studios’ theme parks or CityWalk to reserve your spot in line for any attraction — regardless of which theme park you’re currently standing in!

At this time, not every Universal attraction offers a virtual line. Those that do not have this feature yet still have a standard standby line with distancing markers throughout the queue.

Universal queue

You can only make reservations for the same day as your visit and you can book ride times for up to 10 people in your group (however, we’ve noticed some attractions are only allowing guests to reserve up to 8 spots — we’ll look more into this).

We had two people in our party, and technically since accounts aren’t linked (like they are with My Disney Experience and FastPass+ in Disney World), we were both able to make separate virtual reservations for groups of two. So, it was almost like snagging two virtual line reservations at once.

Flight of the Hippogriff

To Make Your Reservation:

  1. Select “Virtual Line Experience” from the app’s main menu.
  2. Tap on the “Virtual Line Venues” tab to see a list of available attractions.
  3. Select the attraction you want to ride and tap “Virtual Line Pass – Reserve.”
  4. Set how many guests are in your group.
  5. Pick your return time.
  6. Tap “Reserve Virtual Line Pass” to complete your reservation.

Virtual Line

Once you’ve successfully booked your spot in line, you’ll receive a QR code — after that, you’re free to roam the parks until it’s time to head to the attraction!

When we arrived for our reservation, we showed the Univeral employee our phones. They didn’t scan them, but instead checked to make sure it was our time to ride and then let us through! Note: This may vary depending on the day and the attraction.

Virtual Line

After you’ve used your reservation, you can make another one!

Gringotts Bank

Although the app seemed to be having a few issues today, the overall concept seemed to be working! Guests can still experience their favorite attractions and enjoy the parks without having to worry about “bumping” into others while standing in line.

Social distancing markers have also been placed in loading areas so even in places where smaller crowds tend to gather, guests can space themselves out accordingly!

Gringotts Markers

While we don’t know how Disney World will operate its attractions upon reopening quite yet, we know they’ll also be utilizing a new virtual queue system to minimize crowds (which is why they have suspended FastPass+ as this time). Whether it will be similar to Universal Studios Virtual Line system or not, time will tell!

Find out more about the virtual queue system World of Disney in Disney Springs has implemented on busy days here!

Universal Studios Orlando reopens to passholders

Universal Studios Orlando Reopens

Universal Studios Orlando reopens to Annual Passholders today. We were lucky enough to get a time to come in and enjoy the parks after being closed since March!

Other than a line at the temperature check, crowds have been rather light at the theme park.

They have special areas where you can remove your face mask and take a little breather.

They are even selling PRIDE and Universal Studios Face Masks for guests without one.

Susan is off to Islands of Adventure first so she can visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter with little to no wait!

There was hardly anyone around for Triwizard Spirit Rally!

It looks like many Annual Passholders have the same idea as Hogsmeade is quite crowded right now.

Stay tuned for the New Baby Velociraptor Introduced at Universal Studios Orlando’s Raptor Encounter!

Take a Look Inside One of Universal Orlando’s Reopened Hotels!

Universal Orlando will be re-opening to the public on June 5th. But, the resorts and hotels are opening back up to guests today, June 2nd!

Universal Orlando Resort

We’re taking you with us to have a full experience at the resorts to see their new health and safety protocols, check-in process, and more!

At this time, the following Universal Orlando resorts are open to guests:

  • Hard Rock Hotel
  • Loews Royal Pacific Resort
  • Loews Sapphire Falls Resort
  • Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort
  • Universal’s Aventura Hotel
  • Universal’s Endless Summer Resort — Surfside Inn and Suites

Aventura Hotel

We headed over to Universal’s Aventura Hotel to see what it’s like after reopening!

Check-In Process

Right after you step inside the hotel, you must stop at the temperature check station.

Aventura Hotel Sign

According to Universal’s website, “If a guest registers a temperature of 100.4 degrees or greater upon check-in, they will not be allowed to check-in until they receive medical clearance to do so. The rest of the guest’s party will be allowed to check in. We understand some guests may feel they have special conditions, which we will consider upon request.”

Aventura Hotel Temperature Check

This temperature check was similar to the ones we had at Universal’s CityWalk — quick, easy, and painless. After we registered temperatures under 100.4, they gave us green wrist bands to signify that we passed the temperature check.

Wristband After Temperature Check

The staff told us that once you have your temperature checked and approved for the day, your wristband will signify that you don’t have to check in again at CityWalk, the parks, etc. The wristband colors are scheduled to change each day, but it sounds like once you’ve been cleared for the day you’re cleared to skip additional temperature check lines for the rest of the day!

After the temperature check station, we checked in at the hotel how we normally would, but made sure to follow the physical distancing stickers on the floor.

Aventura Hotel Check In

The Aventura Hotel is also offering a touchless checkout where you can simply text the number listed and be on your way!

Health and Sanitization Efforts

Face masks are currently required in all public areas of the resort and there are signs pointing you to the nearest hand washing station.

Aventura Hotel Handwashing Station Sign

There are also several hand-sanitizing stations placed around the resort from the parking garage, to the dining areas, and even out by the pool.

Aventura Hotel Sanitizing Station

Speaking of the pool — it’s open! There weren’t any guests out lounging when we visited, but the chairs have been spaced to allow for physical distancing and lifeguards are stationed on duty.

Aventura Hotel Pool

We clarified with Guest Services that guests are still required to wear face coverings while they are walking around the pool deck, but they may remove them to swim or if they are seated at their lounge chairs.

The Room

The rooms appear to be pretty standard hotel rooms and we were a little surprised to see “high-touch” items like the personal coffee maker still offered.

Aventura Hotel Room Coffee Station

Universal stated, “When possible, guest rooms will be left vacant for 24-48 hours upon checkout, before thoroughly cleaning and checking in a new guest.”

The room was fitted with a telephone and tablet, which both appeared shiny and free of fingerprints.

Aventura Hotel Room Phone and Tablet

The TV was already playing the safety video we shared with you earlier today — reminding guests to follow the signage, wear a mask, and keep a safe distance from parties around them.

Food and Drinks

Aventura’s cafe, Urban Pantry, and Starbucks are both open and offering salads, sandwiches, snacks, and coffee.

Aventura Hotel Starbucks

However, as an added safety measure at Urban Pantry, guests will need to pick up a new cup each time they would like a refill on their drink.

Aventura Hotel Cafe Refill Station

As an added bonus, when we were checking out, the cashier told us they were giving away free desserts to annual passholders today. And you know we can’t resist cheese…or cake! So make sure to ask if they have any special offers if you are visiting.

Aventura Hotel Cheesecake

The lobby bar and rooftop bar are both open and serving up drinks, but not food.

Aventura Hotel Indoor Bar

Aventura Hotel Rooftop Bar

The rooftop bar is using a QR menu printed plenty big for your phone to read it.

Aventura Hotel Rooftop Bar Menu

There is no seating at the bars and some of the rooftop bar’s additional seating is more limited than usual, but there are still plenty of spots to grab a seat and relax awhile.

Overall

Although this was our first time getting our temperatures taken at a hotel, the overall process felt pretty similar to our hotel experiences before the closures. If you haven’t been out and about already, seeing everyone in masks and all of the extra stickers on the ground can take some getting used to. The hotel wasn’t very busy, which probably helped things run more smoothly. We were surprised to still see a coffee maker and tablet in each room (that’s a LOT of nooks and crannies to clean), but so far, we’ve watched the Aventura be diligent about cleaning surfaces between guests, promote distance whenever possible, and take extra steps to protect their guests during this reopening.

Here’s everything you need to know about Universal Orlando’s reopening!

Do you have any questions about what it’s like to stay in a reopened hotel? Let us know in the comments and we’ll do our best to get the answer back to you!
