At the 2026 D23 Expo, a major reimagining of Spaceship Earth was finally announced after years of anticipation and delays. The iconic EPCOT attraction will shift its focus from human communications to the broader theme of human connection. Imagineer Ali Rubinstein revealed that this update will bring the geodesic sphere into the internet age with new technology and storytelling elements. This marks the fourth major overhaul since EPCOT opened in 1982, following updates in 1986, 1994, and 2007. The project is expected to close sometime in early 2027 for a lengthy refurbishment period. Previous plans for Spaceship Earth: Our Shared Story were shelved during the pandemic but this new iteration moves forward with fresh concepts. Fans have long awaited improvements to the ride system, which has shown signs of aging over its decades-long operation. The announcement also coincided with similar news about Journey Into Imagination receiving a reimagining update. This development signals a broader wave of EPCOT enhancements following the successful Test Track overhaul.
