Bob Chapek shares more about phased reopening plan for Walt Disney World

Bob Chapek Disney World

Disney CEO Bob Chapek recently shared information about Walt Disney World‘s phased reopening plans.

He recently shared in a CNBC interview, “We want to make sure that what we present to our guests when we open up with a quintessential Disney experience and while we’ll have substantially lower numbers of guests we want to make sure we do it in a responsible way so they can make those life long memories that last a lifetime.”

He also gave an interview to ABC’s Good Morning America. In that interview Chapek provided more details about how Disney executives arrived at their mid-July theme park reopening date, saying, “Well, it’s really a function of working backwards…How much time we need to open up responsibly…Procedures we’ll have to change dramatically. There’s going to be a lot more training, a lot more sanitation, a lot more hygiene, and, of course, social distancing.”

Chapek also discussed Disney World’s new reservation system saying, “And we’re also going to be introducing the brand new reservation system, so these things take time; And what we want to do is get it right the first time. Make steady progress and eventually be able to accommodate more and more Guests.”

Many Disney fans are concerned about the limited park experience (no fireworks, parades, character meet & greets, etc). To that Chapek said “The silver lining is that while not everything inside the park will be open, most things will be open…for those folks that are lucky enough to be able to get in that new reservation system, it’s going to be quite a magical day.”

Disney’s CEO Discusses Disney World’s Reopening and Shorter Ride Wait Times

Disney proposed a potential reopening date and plan for Disney World yesterday, and it’s a lot to dig into.

Bob Chapek

Yesterday, we heard some comments from Disney CEO Bob Chapek about the reopening and how Disney is looking to welcome guests back responsibly. Today, Chapek spoke with Good Morning America to further lay out the reasoning and expectations behind what a reopening day in Disney World will look like.

Explaining the July 11th date Chapek noted that they chose that date by working backward. As their ability to reopen safely became clear, they picked the date by determining how much time the company would need to open responsibly considering all of the imminent training and procedure changes.

He explained that Disney is going to be a little bit different when we return. Unfortunately, that means an environment where not everyone can be accommodated like they normally could. He asked for patience and understanding from guests as these sorts of situations arise.

“In order to go to full speed, you gotta start somewhere,” Chapek explained, “And we’re going from the beginning and we’re going to be very responsible in doing it.”

When asked about how things will look different, Chapek talked about how the park has had to be re-engineered in a way to allow for appropriate physical distancing. Guests will definitely see areas that are taped off to help with this.

Beyond that, we’re going to see much less density in the parks. Disney is not releasing capacity numbers, but the limits will be significant. Chapek explained that as some things remain closed in the parks, most will be open. “Do the math,” he said — fewer people means shorter wait times.

Chapek called the reduction in waits a “silver lining” of the new measures. He mentioned that for those lucky enough to get into the new reservation system, it’s going to be quite the magical day.

Big Thunder Mountain Crowds

When asked about the biggest challenge to reopening the parks, Chapek spoke on the inherent trust that people have in Disney.

To wrap the interview, Chapek made a few comments about the conversations of the NBA completing their season at Disney World. He noted that Disney is in daily conversations with the NBA to see if that’s something that they want to happen. He noted, “We certainly want it to happen.”

Chapek’s insights certainly shed some light on what we can expect as Disney World steps toward that reopening. We’ll be sure to keep you updated with any more information as it becomes available!

Disney CEO Explains Why Disney World Is Opening AFTER Universal

Earlier, we shared that Chapek had spoken out about why the parks would be opening in July.

Bob Chapek

Now, Chapek has expanded on his initial statements going into a bit more detail as to why the park is choosing to open over a month after other theme parks like Universal Studios, which is reopening June 5th.

With major Florida-base theme parks such as Universal Studios and SeaWorld set to reopen in early June, Disney World has decided not to reopen its parks until July. Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom will be the first to reopen on July 11th while Epcot and Hollywood Studios will follow on July 15th.

But when asked why Disney is planning on reopening its parks much later when compared to other Orlando-area attractions, Chapek stated the following:

Chapek told Bloomberg in an interview, “We feel this is the right time for us, in July. We’ve got a different situation, frankly, than Universal does because we’re much bigger. We have a much more complex business. We’ve got a different labor situation, and at the same time, we’re also going to be implementing a reservation system for our guests. And it’s gonna take some time to take the millions of reservations that we’ve already got on our books and then switch that over to a new reservations system, so we think July is the right time for us.”

Disney has released few details about their new reservation system yet, but shared that we should know more soon. In the meantime, Disney World’s new ticket sales and hotel reservations have been put on pause.

Universal, on the other hand, will be implementing capacity restrictions without the use of a reservation system. You can read their full reopening plan here.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek Speaks About Disney World’s Theme Park Reopening Plan!

Disney World has just presented its reopening procedures to Florida’s Orange County Economic Task Force as well as its proposed reopening dates.

And now, Disney CEO Bob Chapek has just given a brief interview to CNBC with more details about the parks’ proposed reopening dates of July 11th for Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, and July 15th for EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

In response to why Disney World will be reopening more than a month after other Orlando theme parks Universal Studios Orlando and Seaworld are reopening, Chapek noted that Disney World is focused on offering a “quintessential Disney experience,” while ensuring safety and sanitation efforts are done “in a responsible way.”

Disney has proposed to start reopening some of its Florida parks on July 11. “We want to make sure that what we present to our guests when we open up is going to be a quintessential Disney experience,” CEO Bob Chapek says. https://t.co/Eb79d3KZZs pic.twitter.com/VUkIT1fFOK

Chapek stated Disney World will be reopening its parks with a “substantially lower number of guests” but when pressed for more specifics on “limited capacity,” Chapek stated unlike Shanghai Disneyland’s 30% capacity limit which was issued by Chinese officials, there isn’t government guidance in the U.S. on how many guests will be permitted to enter Disney World at this time.

That being said, Chapek stated the number of guests allowed inside the Disney World theme parks will be a calculation of the six-foot social distancing guideline set in place by the CDC as well as the square footage of each park.

So far, we also know parades, fireworks, and character meet-and-greets will be temporarily suspended while Disney World will be utilizing a new reservation system to limit capacity once the parks reopen. We’ll continue to provide you with more details as soon as they’re released.

News: Disney Announces New Park Presidents and Josh D’Amaro As Chairman of Parks

We’ve seen a lot of Disney World president Josh D’Amaro over the past few weeks as he’s sent us some friendly messaging during the Disney World closure.

Now, Josh D’Amaro is no longer leading Disney World. In a press release today, Disney announced its new leadership team, including D’Amaro moving into the position of Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products — the role previously held by the current CEO of the Walt Disney Company, Bob Chapek.

The new position will take D’Amaro from overseeing the operations of Walt Disney World resort to overseeing the entirety of Disney’s travel and leisure businesses including all six international theme parks, Disney Cruise Line, Disney Vacation Club, and Adventures by Disney. He will also head all of Disney’s global consumer product operations including their licensing business, children’s print publisher, the Disney Store, and shopDisney.

The Chairman position reports directly to the CEO, and Chapek commented on his happiness with D’Amaro filling his old role. Of the leadership shift, Chapek said, “I am certain he will take Disney’s Parks, Experiences and Products segment – home to some of our company’s most iconic and beloved businesses – to exciting new heights in the years to come.”

D’Amaro made a statement on his new position explaining, “I look forward to following [Chapek’s] record of driving innovation, value, and growth as we deliver unforgettable experiences for our guests. It is an incredible honor to lead our team of talented and dedicated cast members around the globe, who go above-and-beyond every single day. Even during this challenging time, their enthusiasm for what we do is unwavering, and my goal is to bring our cast members back to work as soon as possible so they can continue to create that magic.”

D’Amaro isn’t the only one to receive a new position either. In fact, the new leadership team includes several new faces. Rebecca Campbell, previously the President of Disneyland, is moving into the position of Chairman for Direct-to-Consumer and International. She will oversee the company’s streaming businesses (Disney+, ESPN+, Hulu, and Hotstar) as well as Disney’s International Channels, Fox Networks International, and Star India.

Replacing the two executives are Jeff Vahle, formerly the President of Disney Signature Experiences, as the new President of Walt Disney World and Ken Potrock, formerly the President of Consumer Products, as the new President of Disneyland.

Other new appointments on the leadership team include Kareem Daniel (former President of Walt Disney Imagineering Operations/Product Creation/Publishing/Games) replacing Potrock as the President of Consumer Products, Games and Publishing and Thomas Mazloum (former Senior Vice President of Resort and Transportation Operations at Disney World) replacing Vahle as the President of Disney Signature Experiences.
